Senior State Department official Michael Anton, who was a strong influence in negotiations with Iran, is expected to resign his post this coming fall, Politico reported on Wednesday.

The Trump administration selected Anton, who leads the State Department’s Policy Planning Staff, to oversee technical discussions with Iran in April, when the United States and Iran were discussing the Middle Eastern country's nuclear program.

It is not clear why Anton is leaving his post in the coming months, and no specific timeline for his departure was given.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who also serves as President Donald Trump's National Security Advisor, praised Anton for his service. It is not clear if Anton is leaving the administration altogether, or moving to another role.

"Michael has been a critical part of this team going back to the transition," Rubio told Politico. "I’m grateful for his service and his ongoing leadership in drafting a groundbreaking National Security Strategy that will operationalize America First foreign policy for years to come."

The State Department official also served on Trump's National Security Council during the president's first term.
