Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says he planned to attend Supreme Court oral arguments on whether President Trump has the legal authority to impose tariffs.

“I’m actually going to go and sit the – hopefully in the front row and listen – have a ringside seat,” Bessent told Fox News Channel’s “Jesse Watters Primetime” on Monday, according to the Associated Press.

Trump had said he wanted to attend the arguments, but decided not to, saying it would have been a distraction.

“It’s not about me, it’s about our country,” he said Sunday.

On Tuesday, Trump posted on Truth Social, "Tomorrow’s United States Supreme Court case is, literally, LIFE OR DEATH for our Country. With a Victory, we have tremendous, but fair, Financial and National Security. Without it, we are virtually defenseless against other Countries who have, for years, taken advantage of us.

"Our Stock Market is consistently hitting Record Highs, and our Country has never been more respected than it is right now. A big part of this is the Economic Security created by Tariffs, and the Deals that we have negotiated because of them. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

The Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether Trump overstepped federal law when he used the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to create tariffs.

Lower courts determined earlier this year that Trump did not have the power under the IEEPA to set tariffs, but let them remain in effect while the Supreme Court considered the issue.

Bessent said the court hearing is “a matter of national security.”
