Britain’s Prime MinisterKeir Starmer said he will step down from the post after mounting issues with in the Labour Party.

These issues include a mounting revolt in the party after devastating local election losses, the Resignation of government ministers and pressure from senior members of his cabinet, per Fox News.

Starmer said he could no longer unite the party in Monday’s announcement. He will stay as Prime Minister until his replacement is chosen.

“Every decision I’ve taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party. I have spoken to his majesty the king this morning to inform him of my decision,” he said outside of 10 Downing St.

Starmer said the increasing opposition within his own party was a factor in his decision.

“The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace,” he said.

Starmer also set a timeline for his successor to be in place.

“I will ask the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to set out a timetable with nominations opening on the 9th of July and completed by the summer recess. In the case of a contest, this will ensure a new leader is in place before Parliament returns in September. I will remain in post as Prime Minister until the contest is complete. And I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power,” he said.

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social Sunday, accusing Starmer of failing “badly” in two areas.

There has been turmoil inside the Labour Party after it lost about 1,500 council seats and control of more than 25 councils in local elections last month, according to reporting from U.K. outlets.
