Eleven Republican lawmakers have drawn a hard line in the sand. They are not waiting for the WNBA to fix its own safety issues. The league must stop ignoring the violence against Caitlin Clark.
On July 8, 2026, a group led by Rep. August Pfluger sent a sharp letter to Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. This move comes after a series of dangerous hits on the Indiana Fever star. The letter demands real answers, not just empty promises.
The Letter and The HitsAccording to the Washington Times, the lawmakers are focused on specific incidents that crossed the line. On June 24, 2026, Atlanta Dream player Alyssa Thomas punched Clark in the throat during a game. That is not standard basketball play. It is assault.
Rep. August Pfluger stated clearly, “Clark has been hip-checked, poked in the eye, and struck in the throat during games. These incidents go far beyond routine physical play.” The letter warns that federal investigations could follow if discrimination is found.
Per NY Post Sports, the problem goes beyond the court. The Phoenix Mercury once shared a social media post that seemed to endorse violence against Clark. The post was later deleted, but the damage was done. It sent a scary message to fans and players alike.
Why This Matters to FamiliesRep. Victoria Spartz highlighted why this fight is so important for young girls. She noted, “Caitlin Clark has made Hoosiers proud and inspired countless young girls across the nation to believe they belong on the court.” When a star gets hurt, those dreams feel threatened.
ESPN commentator Dick Vitale also weighed in on the targeting of Clark. He said the attacks made “no sense” to him. The league needs to protect its players, especially those who draw new fans to the sport.

According to reports, the Fever organization was unaware of this letter and had no contact with the lawmakers. This shows the team is left out of the loop while politics and safety collide.
Time to Act NowWe cannot let this slide. The WNBA claims to want a safe environment for everyone. Yet, they have failed to stop these attacks. The letter threatens federal action if the league does not step up.
This is about more than basketball. It is about holding leaders accountable when they fail to protect their own people. If the WNBA wants to grow, it must ensure safety first.
