The Resistance Hates America

I think I posted this already but I'm posting it again because it really sums up a certain strain of woke anti-American sentiment that is increasingly common on the left. This is Heather Cox Richardson, the leading leftist voice on Substack, arguing that Trump's UFC fight on the White House lawn was motivated by the same impulse as lynching.

‘Historian’ Heather Cox Richardson tells Jim Acosta:
“It's not really a stretch to say that the same impulse that created the UFC fight on the white House lawn...
...is the impulse that really pushed lynching in the late 19th century."
Acosta nods right along with this batsh*t… pic.twitter.com/dd9aJUR6Mz

I'm not sure what she was trying to say here. I watched the full clip to see what I was missing and it still doesn't make any sense. But you wouldn't know it from Jim Acosta's reaction. He's just nodding along like this makes perfect sense.
Anyway, the message that UFC fights between well paid competitors are inherently racist might work for academic midwits but it's probably not going to be very popular with normal people. As Jesse Singal points out, this becomes just another data point suggesting leftists are race-obsessed weirdos.
2/ The extent to which successful hyperpartisan media types are locked in echo chambers in which they are constantly congratulated for saying ridiculous things... it's not great! Even setting aside the shoddiness of the analysis all it does it reinforce RW populist sentiments.

Anyway, that's just one example but not the one I wanted to focus on here. Instead, I wanted to highlight this new Reuters poll timed to America's 250th birthday.

As the U.S. approaches its 250th birthday next month, two out of five Americans do not believe it will endure another 250 years beyond that, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that highlighted deep divisions over how the nation views itself...
Two-thirds of respondents -- including 85% of Democrats and 50% of Republicans -- said they agreed with a statement that American democracy was in danger of failing.
So 85% of Democrats are convinced Democracy is on the ropes. Not coincidentally, that has been the main anti-Trump message for the past decade. But as you go further into the poll, it seems that Democrats don't really like America much anyway.
Some 30% of respondents said they considered America the greatest country in the world, down from 38% in a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in November 2017, during Trump's first term in office. The share of Democrats with this view fell to 11% from 26%, while the share of Republicans held steady at about six in 10...
Some 52% of Republicans said their celebrations would include wearing red, white and blue clothing - the colors of the U.S. national flag - compared to 20% of Democrats.
In general it seems that 80-90% of Democrats just don't feel much for their own country.
It's interesting that all this is happening as World Cup visitors from various countries are saying some pretty nice things about America during their visit. They've been impressed with everything from Buc-ees to how nice regular Americans are to our emergency rooms.

When the German soccer fan landed in New York on June 5 to begin a six-week road trip with a couple of friends for the World Cup, he had about 11,000 followers on X. As he has traveled the country on a tight budget, posting about the wonders small and large he encounters along the way, his audience has grown to more than 600,000.
The camera-shy traveler posts as FreddyLA7, no last name given. As an enthusiastic, even awestruck, visitor, he has performed a public service by opening many Americans’ eyes, just weeks before the nation’s 250th birthday, to see clearly how much there is to savor and celebrate in America...
“I love Americans,” he posted after arriving. “We were about to walk an hour to the stadium in the rain to save on an Uber, and the receptionist at the hotel we were parked in front of decided to drive us there.” From inside Auburn University’s 88,000-seat stadium, he posted, “This is the most ‘The European mind can’t comprehend this’ moment of my life.” Part of the spectacle: “There’s an eagle flying around the stadium.”
Most Democrats aren't feeling any of that. The party is increasingly a group of anti-American depressives who shun the flag and see its history as shameful. CNN ran a story about some of the results of this poll, noting that Democrats mostly see July 4 as just a day off with family and most don't intend to fly a flag.

🚨CNN STUNNED as bombshell poll reveals that Democrats HATE America!

Team blue is not really on America's team anymore. They mostly have criticism and complaints and disgust for their fellow Americans. I'm sure some elected Dems will put on a good show for the cameras given that anti-Americans still isn't widely popular with voters outside their party, but fundamentally the majority of Dems are ashamed of their country. They might claim this is all about Trump, but it's not. They'll feel the same way about America long after he's out of office.
