Letitia James Indicted for Mortgage Fraud

New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted today by a grand jury in Virginia. James is facing two counts involving mortgage fraud.
A federal grand jury in Virginia has indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James on a bank fraud charge.
The grand jury was meeting in the Eastern District of Virginia court to weigh the charges on Thursday, sources confirmed to Fox News.
Earlier this year, the Justice Department opened an investigation into James for alleged mortgage fraud. James successfully won a civil case last year against President Donald Trump and his Trump Organization over allegations of faulty business practices.

Here's CNN's take:
The investigation is focused on a mortgage obtained in 2023 for a property in Norfork, Virginia.
Her attorneys provided a document to the Justice Department in April to push back on what they called “threadbare” allegations.
They said that one document in the mortgage application “mistakenly” said the property would be James’ primary residence. But they submitted other documents to argue there was no fraud.
At this point, we don't really have any details about what evidence prosecutors have in the case.
The James case remained under seal Thursday, making it impossible to assess what evidence prosecutors have...
[Lindsey] Halligan presented the case to the grand jury herself, as she did in the case against Comey, according to the person familiar with the matter.
What we do have is this DOJ press release.
Lindsey Halligan, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, announced today that a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging New York State Attorney General Letitia James with Bank Fraud under 18 U.S.C. Section 1344 and False Statements to a Financial Institution under 18 U.S.C. Section 1014.
“No one is above the law. The charges as alleged in this case represent intentional, criminal acts and tremendous breaches of the public’s trust,” said U.S. Attorney Halligan. “The facts and the law in this case are clear, and we will continue following them to ensure that justice is served.”
If convicted, Letitia James faces penalties including up to 30 years in prison per count, up to a $1 million fine on each count, and forfeiture. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
An indictment is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

We also have the indictment itself which involves James' purchase of a house in Norfolk, VA.

The counts say that James took out a loan for the house as a second home not as a rental property, thereby securing a lower interest rate. James is denying the charges.
The indictment alleges James falsely claimed that a home in Norfolk, Virginia, was her second residence, allowing her to obtain favorable loan terms, and that she rented the property to a family of three.
James vehemently denied the charges against her.
“These charges are baseless, and the president’s own public statements make clear that his only goal is political retribution at any cost," she said in a statement. "The president’s actions are a grave violation of our Constitutional order and have drawn sharp criticism from members of both parties."
James posted this video a short time ago.
This is nothing more than a continuation of the president’s desperate weaponization of our justice system.
I am not fearful — I am fearless.
We will fight these baseless charges aggressively, and my office will continue to fiercely protect New Yorkers and their rights. pic.twitter.com/X9U0EsHuGM

Of course the response to this from the left is extremely predictable. She's being targeted for selective prosecution by Trump!

New Yorkers know @NewYorkStateAG James for her integrity, her independence, and her relentless fight for justice.
What we're seeing today is nothing less than the weaponization of the Justice Department to punish those who hold the powerful accountable.

Nice try, DOJ. Filing charges against New York AG Letitia James? This is a clear fear tactic.
The last U.S. AG walked because there was no evidence to prosecute her.
We aren’t going to let the president play mob boss with our country.

Scott Jennings says this argument shouldn't work for Letitia James since selective prosecution is the only reason anyone knows her name.

She ran for office on the promise of going after Trump.
Reminder: Letitia James campaigned for Attorney General on the specific promise of using her office to wage lawfare against President.
And then she did, clearly depriving him of his rights.
