Sunday Smiles

I take a couple of days off, and the world goes to hell.

Either I am Atlas, holding the world up by my shoulders, or more likely, the world is always on the brink of going to hell. I get away from my computer for a day or two, and when I come back, reality hits me like a slap in the face.

Maybe there is a lesson there...to maintain your sanity, stay away from the news every once in a while.

Speaking of which...

ABC's Terry Moran vented his spleen last night, spewing bile at Stephen Miller in a manner that used to be considered a real no-no in the journalism biz. For a few decades in the 20th century, journalists were taught to pretend to be objective, and many even attempted to adhere to this standard. But as the media landscape changed with the proliferation of news sources--and of social media outlets--the mask came off

“The thing about Stephen Miller is not that he is the brains behind Trumpism. Yes, he is one of the people who conceptualizes the impulses of the Trumpist movement and translates them into policy. But that’s not what’s interesting about Miller,” Miller argued on X early Sunday.

“It’s not brains. It’s bile. Miller is a man who is richly endowed with the capacity for hatred. He’s a world-class hater,” the ABC News reporter added. “You can see this just by looking at him because you can see that his hatreds are his spiritual nourishment. He eats his hate.”

“Trump is a world-class hater. But his hatred only a means to an end, and that end his his own glorification. That’s his spiritual nourishment.”

Moran did what journalists often do when they blurt out what they really think online: deleted the tweet. But once the mask is off it's pretty hard to put it back on, since we have already seen what is underneath.

CNN's Reza Aslan, who styles himself a religious scholar, let his freak flag fly against President Trump (and later Nicholas Sandmann) and lost his gig for being a bit too honest about his nastiness. Moran has crossed into this territory now.

Azlan, though, was never a "journalist," but instead a commentator.  Moran is ABC's "Senior National Correspondent," which puts this tweet in a whole other category.

An ABC journalist @TerryMoran posted this absolutely vile smear of Stephen Miller. It’s dripping with hatred. Remember that every time you watch ABC’s coverage of the Trump administration.

As it happens, I know Stephen quite well. And he’s motivated by love of country. He’s motivated by a fear that people like Terry Moran make rules that normal Americans have to follow, but well connected people don’t.

It’s why he fought so hard to get President Trump elected and why he works to hard to implement the agenda.

ABC should apologize to Stephen. What Terry posted is disgraceful.

One has to wonder--are we better off having journalists reveal what they really think? I am inclined to believe that it is. Let it all hang out there so we can all see it. We are well past the point where most journalists try to present all sides of an issue, so it is better that the pretense is dispensed with. MSNBC is unapologetically liberal, Fox is center-right, and CNN leans left.

Why pretend? If Terry Moran hates Stephen Miller, he might as well say so--that way, the people who are watching him describe Miller, Trump, Trumpists, MAGA, and anything related will know that Moran isn't just "telling it like it is," but rather how he sees it.

Moran is projecting, obviously. Read his description of Trump and Miller and it sounds an awful lot like him:

“It’s not brains. It’s bile. Miller is a man who is richly endowed with the capacity for hatred. He’s a world-class hater,” the ABC News reporter added. “You can see this just by looking at him because you can see that his hatreds are his spiritual nourishment. He eats his hate.”

“Trump is a world-class hater. But his hatred only a means to an end, and that end his his own glorification. That’s his spiritual nourishment.”

The big difference between this description and Moran's normal affect is that he normally hides it pretty well, just as journalists have trained themselves to hide their biases when reporting and pretend they are something they are not. Isn't it better that Moran lets us all know that he absolutely reviles Trump and Miller rather than try to fool the credulous?
