“Just the tip of the iceberg” is  a perfect metaphor for what’s unfolding in Minnesota—a state swamped by over $1 billion in alleged welfare and program fraud, much of it tied to networks in the Somali community.

But Omar isn’t just the tip; she’s quick to cry “racism” whenever the fraud is called out. She’s slammed scrutiny of these schemes as “disgusting” and “vile,” insisting we shouldn’t “blame the lawlessness of an individual on a whole community.”

Yet federal prosecutors paint a different picture: schemes stacked on schemes, draining resources meant for kids, the disabled, and the needy.Here’s a rundown of the major recent Somali-linked fraud cases in Minnesota, from most recent developments backward:

December 2025: Ongoing raids and new charges in Medicaid programs, including Integrated Community Supports and home health services. U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson warns fraud could exceed $9 billion across state-run services, with funds wired overseas (some to Kenya and Somalia).

Late 2025 Autism Therapy Fraud Explosion: Programs ballooned from $21 million (2021) to over $104 million (2024), riddled with fake diagnoses, unqualified “therapists,” and kickbacks to parents in the Somali community. Charges include Asha Farhan Hassan for a $14 million scheme—plus ties to older frauds.

Housing Stabilization Services Scam (charges starting September 2025): Alleged $302 million+ drained via fictitious clients and bogus claims for helping the disabled and homeless.

Feeding Our Future Pandemic Meals Fraud (core scandal, trials 2024–2026): The granddaddy—$250–300 million stolen by claiming to feed nonexistent kids. Dozens convicted, lavish spending on cars and villas exposed, and allegations some funds indirectly supported al-Shabaab terrorists in Somalia (now under Treasury investigation).

These aren’t isolated incidents; prosecutors describe “industrial-scale” networks, mostly involving Somali-descended defendants, exploiting lax oversight. Billions gone, while real needs go unmet.

And below the waterline? Scrutiny is turning to Omar herself. Renewed probes into old allegations (immigration/marriage fraud), plus questions about campaign donations from fraud-linked figures (which she’s returned).
