ATHENS, Greece — Migrant flows from Libya to Greece have resumed after a brief pause, with over 150 people rescued in two separate incidents on Friday morning, according to the Greek Coast Guard and Frontex.
In the first operation, Frontex, assisted by a Singapore-flagged cargo ship, rescued 113 migrants aboard three inflatable boats off the coast of Gavdos. All individuals were reported to be in good health and were safely transported to the port of Gavdos.
Shortly after, a Greek Coast Guard patrol intercepted a vessel carrying 39 migrants off the coast of Heraklion, Crete. The migrants were rescued and transferred to the port of Kaloi Limenes.
Greek and Libyan authorities have been engaged in ongoing discussions to address the surge in migratory flows toward Crete. Meanwhile, the Greek government is preparing to vote on a new bill that would mandate the detention of migrants ineligible for asylum if they fail to leave the country promptly.
