President Donald J. Trump has announced the imposition of tariffs on eight European nations that have actively opposed the acquisition of Greenland by the U.S.

This decision, communicated through a post on his social network Truth Social, underscores the leader’s determination to prioritize American interests in the face of inaction and weak stances from European allies, many of which have been influenced by leftist policies that prioritize globalism over sovereignty and real defense.

The tariffs will begin at 10% starting February 1, 2026, and will increase to 25% on June 1 of the same year, remaining in effect until an agreement is reached for the complete purchase of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark that is strategic for countering the expansionist ambitions of China and Russia in the Arctic.

The list of affected countries includes Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Finland, nations that in recent days have sent symbolic military contingents to Greenland in an attempt to support the Danish position and block U.S. negotiations.

Trump has harshly criticized this interference, recalling that the U.S. has subsidized these nations for decades without receiving adequate compensation, especially in defense matters. «It is time for Denmark to give something back,» the president declared, emphasizing that Greenland represents a risk to world peace if it falls under hostile influence, with only «two dog sleds» as current protection, according to his ironic words in the post.

This measure is not a whim, it is a response to the growing presence of Russian and Chinese ships in the region, which threaten global stability and require decisive action that only a leader like Trump can undertake, in contrast to previous leftist-leaning administrations that ignored these threats.

The strategic importance of Greenland lies in its vast Arctic territory, rich in mineral resources and key for controlling maritime routes and defense systems like the «Golden Dome,» a complex of radars and missiles that could enhance U.S. security against nuclear or cyber aggressions.

We had previously reported it in Gateway Hispanic, where we highlighted the statements of Vice President JD Vance about Denmark’s insufficient investment in Greenland’s security, which has allowed the advance of rival powers like China and Russia.

Trump has insisted that the acquisition is essential for the planet’s survival, criticizing European governments for playing a «dangerous game» that puts peace at risk by not recognizing the need for a strong U.S. presence on the island.

This tariff policy aligns with Trump’s «America First» approach, which seeks to balance trade inequalities and strengthen the U.S. position against allies that have depended on American subsidies without reciprocity.

The tariffs will affect all goods exported to the U.S., economically pressuring these countries to reconsider their opposition and facilitate an agreement that benefits collective security, far from progressive ideologies that weaken traditional alliances.
