Croatian police clarify the case of the injured nun in Zagreb: it was self-harm and not an external attack

The Zagreb Police have closed the investigation into the incident that occurred on November 28, 2025, in the Malešnica neighborhood. Sister Marija Tatjana Zrno, a 35-year-old nun from the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, was injured with a bladed weapon.

Initially, the religious sister stated that she had been stabbed in the abdomen by an unknown individual while walking down the street. The news spread quickly and, in some social media posts and media outlets, speculation arose about the possibility of a religiously motivated attack.

Some publications attributed to the alleged attacker the phrase “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great”). However, that claim was never part of Sister Zrno’s official testimony.

After four days of investigation, Croatian police have concluded that there was no attacker. The wounds were self-inflicted with a knife that the religious sister herself had purchased that same day at a nearby shop.

Forensic evidence, the analysis of security camera footage, and inconsistencies detected in the sequence of events led to this conclusion. Authorities officially ruled out any external assault.

Sister Marija Tatjana Zrno has now been charged with filing a false report. Authorities and close sources have indicated that she suffers from mental health problems and is currently receiving specialized psychiatric care.

The case initially generated widespread coverage and reactions of concern in political and ecclesiastical circles. However, the police clarification has put an end to any speculation about an attack of an Islamist or migratory nature.

This is an example why media outlets and public profiles must exercise extreme caution when addressing information related to highly sensitive issues.

It is essential to wait for proper verification and rely on confirmed sources before sharing or amplifying any claim.

Even though serious allegations or accusations — including those involving attacks by Islamist, jihadist, or extremist groups — have later proven to be true, media outlets, influencers, and social-media handlers must actively investigate and confirm evidence before publishing or sharing such claims. Otherwise, they risk being labeled as sources of disinformation. In cases like these, prudence is not only advisable — it is essential.”
