SAG Awards: ‘Conclave’ Takes Ensemble Prize; Moore, Chalamet, Saldaña & Culkin Get Film Acting Nods; ‘Only Murders’ & ‘Shōgun’ Casts Win – Full List
Conclave took the marquee Ensemble in a Motion Picture prize at the 31st annual SAG Awards, which were handed out tonight at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The papal drama from Focus Features, which won Best Film at the recent BAFTA Awards, is up for eight Academy Awards next weekend.
The category is SAG’s version of Best Picture and, as often as not, has produced some interesting upsets that sent movies such as Parasite, CODA and others on to Best Picture Oscar glory. All of SAG’s Ensemble nominees also are up for the top Academy Award.

Related StoriesElsewhere at the last major Hollywood guild awards ahead of the Oscars on March 2, Demi Moore had a career-breakthrough win as Female Actor in a Motion Picture, continuing her impressive awards-season run for the Mubi horror pic The Substance. Timothée Chalamet scored a shocking upset win for Lead Actor in a Motion Picture for his role as the young Bob Dylan in Searchlight’s A Complete Unknown.
Zoe Saldaña added to her stellar awards-season run by winning the Female Actor in a Supporting Role prize for Netflix‘s Emilia Pérez. Now it’s on to the Academy Awards for her. The first statuette of the evening went to another expected winner, A Real Pain‘s Kieran Culkin for Male Actor in a Supporting Role. He added to his wins at the Golden Globes, Saturday’s Spirit Awards and elsewhere — to go along with an Emmy for Succession.

Notably shut out during the ceremony hosted by Kristen Bell was Best Picture Oscar hopeful Anora, which dominated the Spirit Awards on Saturday and whose star Mikey Madison won the BAFTA. Wicked and A Complete Unknown come into the evening with a film-leading five and four nominations, respectively, with Anora and Oscars noms leader Emilia Pérez next at three each.
After a slew of non-surprises early on, we finally got an upset when Martin Short won Male Actor in a Comedy Series for Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. After three consecutive Emmy noms for the role, he beat Emmy fave Jeremy Allen White of The Bear, and everyone else.

The series itself also scored the Ensemble Comedy Series prize, leaving The Bear to clear its table. The popular comedy does have seven Emmys over its four seasons, but all are in crafts categories. It’s the first major awards success for stars Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez in their roles.
There was another mini-upset in Male Actor in a TV Movie or Limited Series when Colin Farrell won for Max’s The Penguin. He did win Critics Choice and Golden Globe nods, but Emmy- and Spirit Award-winning Baby Reindeer star Richard Gadd might have been the favorite.

The night’s second and third winners were no shock either, as Shōgun’s Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai took Male and Female Actor in a Drama Series, respectively. They also won the Emmy and Golden Globe for their roles in the FX juggernaut, which later took the Ensemble in a Drama Series, capping a tremendous year.
Another already awards-laden star took Female Actor in a Comedy Series: Jean Smart for Max’s Hacks. She already has three Emmys for her role as Deborah Vance. Ditto for the Female Actor in a Limited Series winner, Jessica Gunning of Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, who also won an Emmy, Golden Globe, Critics Choice and Spirit Award for the creepy part.

Hollywood continued to celebrate the fearless first responders who worked to save lives and property during the awful Los Angeles wildfires last month. During the pre-show, an invited firefighter was introduced by SAG-AFTRA‘s Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and drew a standing ovation. Host Kristen Bell later called attention to the “most-attractive table” at the ceremony, which was staffed with first responders.
Two-time Oscar winner and Emmy winner Jane Fonda received the SAG Life Achievement Award tonight. “This means the world to me,” she said onstage. “And your enthusiasm makes this seem less like a twilight of my life and more like a ‘go girl, kick ass’ — which is good because I’m not done.” You go, Jane. She also hit the political climate with a rebellious but hopeful outlook. Watch her speech here:
