Texas consumers are urged to check their freezers and pantries for recalled tater tots and similar potato products after McCain Foods USA Inc. announced a voluntary recall of more than 38,000 cases.

The products may contain plastic pieces, posing a choking or injury hazard.

The recall affects popular brands including Ore-Ida Tater Tots and Sysco Imperial Potato Tater Barrel, distributed nationwide, including to retailers in Texas.

The recalled items were produced at an Idaho facility and shipped between dates in late 2025, with affected states including Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin.

No illnesses have been reported, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified the action as a potential health concern.

Consumers should identify the products by checking the packaging for specific lot codes and best-by dates listed in the recall notice.

The FDA advises discarding the items or returning them to the place of purchase for a refund. For full details, visit the FDA recall page.

This recall follows other recent food alerts impacting Texas, such as a December 2025 USDA notice for imported Lorraine Quiche products distributed to Texas (among other states) without proper inspection, as reported by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Also in December, the FDA issued an alert regarding dog biscuits sold in Texas and six other states due to possible Salmonella contamination, affecting brands such as Heartland Harvest and Country Vet.

Officials recommend checking product labels and signing up for alerts to stay informed, especially for households with children who consume frozen snacks.

No confirmed injuries from the tater tots recall have been reported, but federal agencies continue monitoring.
