Most American Company McDonald's Bringing Back Most American Offering
McDonald’s announced Tuesday that it’s bringing back its fried apple pie in celebration of America’s 250th birthday.
Customers will be able to buy McDonald’s fried apple pie at U.S. locations for a limited time beginning June 23, according to a company press release. The fried apple pie was developed by Litton Cochran, a McDonald’s franchisee based in Tennessee, in 1968, the Associated Press (AP) reported.
The fried apple pie was last offered to U.S. customers in 1992 when the fast food franchise replaced it with a baked apple pie. The decision to discontinue the fried apple pie was in response to customer desires and trends in dining, according to Eater.
Although the item has not been offered in the U.S. for more than three decades, it has remained on the menu at McDonald’s franchises in various countries, including Mexico, China and Australia, the AP reported. The fried apple pie contains 220 calories, and its recipe “features 100% American-grown apples inside a crispy, golden crust that’s fried to perfection,” according to the McDonald’s website. The item is listed as available in-store and via the McDonald’s app at participating McDonald’s restaurants.
U.S. customers could buy fried apple pies at the chain only at locations in Hawaii and a single restaurant in Downey, California, Mashed reported in March.
Eric Cochran, a McDonald’s owner and operator and the grandson of Litton Cochran, reacted to the fried apple pie returning to the fast food restaurant’s menu, according to the company’s press release.
“There are certain things that just take you back — and the Fried Apple Pie is one of them. It’s something that people love and remember from growing up,” Cochran said.

Eric previously explained how the fried apple pie became an offering on the McDonald’s menu while speaking with WBIR in July 2025.
“Ray Kroc [president of McDonald’s from 1955 to 1968] was looking for a dessert and had tried a couple of different things, and my grandfather, Litton Cochran, suggested an apple pie, a fried apple pie,” Eric said.
“He said it was a Southern tradition, a Southern dessert that would go over real well, and it was easy to kind of carry, and so, he and my grandmother got started working on a recipe. The way my dad tells the story, they made two to three versions every night for a couple of months and would have him and his siblings try them and make them jot down notes about what they liked or didn’t like, trying different fillings, crusts, spices, and after they figured out the one they liked the best, they introduced it to Ray, and he tried it out and told him to go find a producer to start making it,” he continued.
To celebrate the return of the fried apple pie, McDonald’s is installing a 35-foot sculpture meant to resemble the item along Route 66 in the vicinity of its headquarters in Chicago, Illinois, according to the company’s press release. The sculpture will remain in place until July 4.
