Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, announced a recall of over 1 million Jeep vehicles for potential fire safety concerns on Tuesday.

According to the recall, Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators between model years 2021 and 2025 “may have an electrical connection issue in the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring.” Combustible materials can overheat and possibly start a vehicle fire, even if the vehicle is turned off, according to a press release from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The statement warned Jeep owners to “park their vehicles outside and away from other vehicles and buildings” until repairs have been made.

Stellantis alerted the NHTSA of the recall, CBS News reported.

The press release stated that a 2024 NHTSA investigation influenced the recall, beginning after the administration’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received field reports “alleging incidents of engine compartment fires.” ODI “learned of several thermal events originating at the power steering pump electrical connector” after contacting the company. According to the recall report, Chrysler first investigated fires originating in the same area between May 2023 and April 2024, closing the investigation “due to the low rate of occurrence.” The company re-opened the investigation in August 2024 after receiving more reports of the incident.

When reached for comment, a spokesperson stated that “Affected customers will be notified by first class mail when they can schedule service.”

“FCA US is working diligently to accelerate remedy availability and anticipates a solution no later than July,” the statement added.
