Someone check in on this woman, please.

“i married my dog for my 50th birthday… BLESS!” wrote Jenny Lewis, leader singer for Rilo Kiley, on Saturday. Lewis attached photos of the “wedding,” including Polaroid shots of her in a wedding veil and gown, where she posed next to her dog. Lewis’ canine groom, Bobby Rhubarb, is a cockapoo, says The Independent.

Bobby Rhubarb was the subject of Lewis’ 2021 single, “Puppy and a Truck,” according to Rolling Stone. The song begins: “My forties are kicking my ass / And handing ’em to me in a margarita glass / I was infatuated with an older man / And then I dated a psychopath.” (RELATED: Britney Spears Reveals She Married Herself In Creepy Video)

“If you feel like giving up / Shut up / Get a puppy and a truck,” Lewis concludes.

“I don’t got no kids / I don’t got no kids / I don’t got no roots / I’m an orphan,” Lewis adds in a later verse.

Lewis revealed she was “in a really rough spot” when she bought the dog, speaking to Rolling Stone in 2023. “I’d been isolated for over a year, quarantining totally on my own, and I had to find things to get me out of the house. The truck provided that.”

“I don’t have any kids, but this dog opened me up in so many ways — being responsible for a soul and caring for something outside of yourself,” Lewis told the outlet.

“I wake up at three in the morning and I’m like, ‘Oh God, what have I done with my life?’ Sadness is the default, and you have to work your way out a bit. Exercise helps,” Lewis told The Independent in 2023. “And so does having a dog.”

I’m struck by the sadness of Lewis’ story. Staging a wedding to your dog is weird and gross, but most of all, pathetic. Lewis’ interviews suggest a woman who is unhappy and lonely and suspects she may have seriously screwed up her life. Other women have “married” their pets in years past.

Former swimsuit model Elizabeth Hoad, then 49, “married” her golden retriever in 2019, according to the New York Post.

“I found the one and I love him,” Hoad said.

Deborah Hodge, then 49, married her cat in 2022 as part of a “loophole scheme to avoid rental restrictions,” according to the New York Post.

“She is fundamentally the most important thing in my life after my children,” Hodge told the South West News Service, according to the Post.

It’s probably not a coincidence that all these women are going on 50. Midlife crises take many forms.
