A gunman shot three New York police officers responding to a domestic disturbance Friday night before fleeing and opening fire on another officer, authorities said.

All three Rochester Police Department (RPD) officers are expected to survive, the Rochester-based WROC reported. Police killed the suspect after he refused commands to drop his weapon.

Officers from the RPD’s Genesee section arrived at the 600 block of Chili Avenue around 10:15 p.m. after a man reported his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend was trying to break into her home. The caller told dispatchers he was a licensed pistol permit holder and had his firearm with him.

When police arrived, they found the suspect on the side of the house. He immediately opened fire, striking two officers and the caller. The caller and suspect exchanged gunfire, with the caller taking multiple hits. (RELATED: Man Arrested For Beating Woman Is Released From Jail, Immediately Beats Up Same Woman)

The suspect fled to the intersection of Thurston Road and Arnett Boulevard. Officers ordered him to drop his weapon, but he shot a third officer instead. Police returned fire and killed him.

One officer was shot multiple times on Chili Avenue and is in stable condition. His ballistic vest saved his life. A second officer, also shot at the initial scene, is in critical but stable condition. The third officer, wounded at the second location, suffered serious injuries but is expected to recover.

The caller remains in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

“This is always our biggest nightmare during this time of the year when these types of incidents happen,” Rochester Mayor Malik Evans said.

The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Attorney General’s Office will conduct separate investigations. Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community.
