Peter Greene, the character actor who menaced Jim Carrey in “The Mask” and terrorized audiences in “Pulp Fiction,” was found dead inside his New York City apartment Friday.

Greene was 60. Police discovered Greene unresponsive in his Lower East Side home on Clinton Street around 3:25 p.m., the New York Post reported. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities and his longtime manager Gregg Edwards

Investigators said they do not suspect foul play. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

“He was a terrific guy,” Edwards told the New York Post. “Truly one of the great actors of our generation. His heart was as big as there was. I’m going to miss him. He was a great friend.” (RELATED: ‘Kill Bill’ Star Michael Madsen Dead At 67)

Greene built his career playing villains throughout the 1990s. He portrayed the sadistic security guard and serial killer Zed in Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 classic “Pulp Fiction.” His turn as ruthless mobster Dorian Tyrell opposite Carrey and Cameron Diaz in “The Mask” was “arguably his best role,” Edwards said.

The actor was set to begin production in January on an independent thriller called “Mascots” alongside Mickey Rourke. Edwards said the film’s writer-director, Kerry Mondragón, broke down in tears upon hearing the news.

Greene amassed roughly 95 credits over his career. His work included “The Usual Suspects,” “Laws of Gravity,” “Clean, Shaven,” “Blue Streak” and “Training Day.”

A native of Montclair, New Jersey, Greene ran away from home at 15 and lived on the streets of New York. He battled addiction and sought treatment in 1996.

“He fought his demons but overcame them,” Edwards said.
