Random Attack Allegedly Turns Man's Drive Home Into Horror Scene On Highway
A frozen water balloon thrown through a windshield allegedly left a Northern California man partially blinded and questioning why anyone would commit such a violent act.
Alex Plant, 28, was driving home from work Thursday night on Highway 20 near Hallwood Boulevard in Yuba County when a driver traveling in the opposite direction allegedly threw something out the window around 9:30 p.m, KCRA reported.
“I barely saw it for a quarter of a second before it just came straight through,” Plant said. The frozen balloon reportedly shattered his windshield at 45 mph, sending glass into his face and eyes.
Plant pulled off the two-lane highway and asked Siri to call 911. “My eyes were already starting to close up, so I couldn’t even look at the phone if I wanted to,” he said. A piece of white balloon stuck in the shattered glass showed first responders what happened. (RELATED: 20 Hospitalized After Bus Returning From Church Camp Flips Over On Highway)

Medical staff spent hours at the hospital removing glass shards from Plant’s face and eyes, KCRA reported. “I wasn’t even sure I’d be able to see my family, to be honest with you. It was really stressful,” Plant said.
Plant’s left eye has recovered completely, but his right eye remains blurry with sensitivity to light. Doctors removed a piece of glass almost an eighth of an inch in size from underneath his eyelid, ABC News reported.
Plant questions the deliberate nature of the alleged attack. “Somebody went through all that trouble to, like, freeze it, tie it off, you know what I mean? And then throw it through the windshield before it defrosted,” he said, according to KCRA.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating but has limited information and no witnesses, a spokesperson told KCRA. Anyone with information should contact CHP.
