Miami real estate developer Todd Nepola filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Bravo Media, NBCUniversal and Purveyors of Pop Productions in Florida court.

Nepola accused the companies behind “The Real Housewives of Miami” of defamation and unauthorized use of his name and likeness, according to court documents reviewed by the Daily Caller. The ex-husband of former cast member Alexia Nepola claimed the network manipulated storylines and used unauthorized footage to falsely portray him as facing financial distress. “Nepola is seeking $10 million in damages for defamation and $1 million for unauthorized use of his name and likeness, along with injunctive relief to prevent further misuse or rebroadcast of his image,” the filing states.

“Mr. Nepola wanted to be Alexia’s husband, not her storyline,” the complaint states. “Enough is enough.”

Represented by attorney Scott J. Weiselberg of Kopelowitz Ostrow Ferguson Weiselberg Gilbert, Nepola alleged that Bravo and its producers fabricated storylines implying he faced financial trouble despite his multimillion-dollar real estate holdings and strong professional reputation. The disputed portrayals appeared in Seasons 6 and 7 of “The Real Housewives of Miami,” according to the filing.

“Unfortunately, while this ‘counterfeit drama’ may help network executives generate higher salaries and reward shareholders with higher stock prices, there are real people, whose lives are too often derisively referred to as ‘reality television fodder,’ who are actually impacted, manipulated, and defamed in the process,” the filing states. “Mr. Nepola is one such person.”

Nepola’s filing argued that viewers are “led to believe that the events, character portrayals, and interpersonal dynamics are reflective of the cast members’ real lives.”

The complaint claimed Bravo, NBCUniversal, and Purveyors of Pop “deliberately cultivated” this perception by carefully editing and constructing storylines to “create maximum dramatic impact while maintaining the illusion of authenticity.”

He further alleged that the show “continued to intentionally and maliciously air defamatory statements” that damaged his “reputation in the Miami business community,” accusing the companies of leaving a “path of destruction” in pursuit of “good television.”

“The defamatory content has been aired and re-aired across multiple platforms including traditional cable, on-demand streaming via Peacock and other services, and official Bravo or NBCUniversal social media accounts,” the filing states.
