Hurricane Humberto Forms As Category 1, Could Potentially Become Major Storm As It Strengthens

Hurricane Humberto developed into a Category 1 storm Friday morning after reaching winds of 75 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

A tropical storm hits hurricane status when its winds reach 74 mph.

As it spins across the Atlantic Ocean, currently located hundreds of miles from the northern Leeward Islands on a northwest track, Humberto is gaining strength gradually. This weekend, the hurricane is expected to “rapidly intensify” into a major storm that will be a Category 3 or higher, per forecasters. In the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, Humberto is the third hurricane and eighth named storm.

According to the latest advisory from the NHC, Humberto has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, with gusts being even higher.

When Hurricane Humberto reaches major storm strength, forecasters expect winds to reach at least 115 mph.

Located around 465 miles from the north Leeward Islands on the northeastern side, Hurricane Humberto is a slow-moving storm headed northwest at only 3 mph.

Over the next few days, it’s expected that Humberto will be turning west-northwest or northwest, according to the NHC. Forecasters have the storm curving out to sea hundreds of miles away from the East Coast of the United States.

It’s also being monitored whether or not Hurricane Humberto will have any effects on Invest 94L, which is located west of the hurricane. A number of computer forecast models have the invest making an impact on the U.S.’ Southeastern coast.

2025 Atlantic hurricane season ends Nov. 30.
