'Almost Killed Me': Neighborhood Faces Bloody Series Of Attacks By Vicious Critter

A vicious critter terrorized a California neighborhood, sending two residents to the emergency room after savage attacks that left them bloodied and bewildered.
Joan Heblack never saw it coming. The golden squirrel latched onto her leg during her morning walk through Lucas Valley in San Rafael, refusing to let go.
“It clamped onto my leg. The tail was flying up here. I was like, ‘Get it off me, get off me!’ I didn’t want to touch it,” Heblack said. The attack left wounds severe enough to require emergency medical treatment, ABC 7 News reported.
Isabel Campoy suffered a similar fate while walking with her niece Carmen near Mount Lassen Drive. The aggressive rodent launched itself at her face. (RELATED: REPORT: 11-Year-Old Attacked By Mountain Lion While Feeding Chickens)
“This is beautiful, now it’s following us, until she almost killed me,” said a victim of the squirrel attack. https://t.co/WemqosbITv

“Squirrel went from the floor, tried to jump up to my face, I tried to protect my face, my arm was completely overcome by squirrel. Finally it jumped off, by then I was full of blood, I run to the emergency room,” Campoy said.
“This is beautiful, now it’s following us, until she almost killed me,” the woman continued.
Neighbors report at least five people have faced attacks from what appears to be the same golden-colored squirrel, according to the outlet. Warning flyers now dot the neighborhood, and residents share their concerns on Nextdoor.
Vanessa Potter from WildCare in San Rafael explained that squirrels don’t carry rabies, but human feeding likely caused the aggression.
“If they associate people with food, they’re not afraid of them. They will look for food. If they don’t get it, there can be frustrations. They can be territorial of their space,” Potter said.
The suspect squirrel hasn’t appeared in several days, but residents remain vigilant. Campoy continues recovering from her injuries.
“It hurts to touch the skin. I am putting my best power and mind in order to say I’ll survive this,” she said.
