A New Jersey state trooper who reportedly used to guard the governor allegedly shot and killed his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend.

Police found Lauren Semanchik and Tyler Webb dead in a New Jersey home on Aug. 2 after a call was made about an unconscious female, according to Hunterdon County prosecutors. New Jersey State Police Lt. Ricardo Santos was allegedly later discovered dead in his car with a handgun in a suspected suicide. He served in Democratic New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy’s protection detail a few years prior to the incident, according to CBS News New York. Franklin Township police had responded to multiple 911 calls on Aug. 1 claiming to hear “audible gunshots and screaming,” according to the prosecutor’s office. The officers were unable to determine the location of the incident at the time.

Semanchik’s father discovered the couple’s bodies the following day and her sister, her relatives told CBS News. “She was running away. She was shot in the back,” Deanna Semanchik, the woman’s sister, said.

“She gave so much of her life to other people and she deserved so much better,” she continued.

Semanchik broke things off with Santos almost a year prior, according to the family. Santos began stalking and harassing her after the breakup, going as far as allegedly filling her gas tank with water and placing recording devices in her residence, Semanchik’s sister alleged.

“She tried to block him many times and he continued to call her from restricted numbers. He showed up at her work, that’s where the car was keyed,” Deanna told CBS News New York.

A spokesperson for Gov. Murphy issued a statement to the outlet. “We are shocked and devastated by this horrific tragedy. Due to the law enforcement investigation currently underway, we will refrain from further comment at this time,” the spokesperson said.

Semanchik worked as a veterinarian while Webb was a firefighter with the Pinewald Pioneer Volunteer Fire Company.
