NCAA Finally Gets Something Right For Once

A dead clock is right twice a day, and the NCAA is no exception.

The NCAA basketball tournaments for both the men and women will not be seeing expansion past 68 teams in the 2025-26 season. However, the tournaments being expanded one day is still a topic, according to an announcement Monday from NCAA Senior Vice President of Basketball Dan Gavitt.

“Expanding the tournament fields is no longer being contemplated for the 2026 men’s and women’s basketball championships,” said Gavitt in an official statement, per ESPN. “However, the committees will continue conversations on whether to recommend expanding to 72 or 76 teams in advance of the 2027 championships.”

The conversation around the tournament expanding to 72 or 76 schools had gotten more interest back in the spring. (RELATED: Auburn’s Bruce Pearl Blasts Obama For Gaza Stance)

Charlie Baker, the president of the NCAA, stated in July that the largest hurdle for expanding the tournament is logistics.

“The tournament has to start after the conference championships are over,” said Baker. “And right now Selection Sunday happens like two hours after the last tournament game ends and has to finish by the Tuesday before the Masters. There’s not a lot of room there. Any expansion, we’re going to have to figure out how to put it in and then logistically how to make it work.”

But for right now, we’re in the clear, and hopefully it’s a decision that the NCAA will stick with full-time.

I would say “keep up the good work, NCAA,” but I know they won’t.
