House Dems Trash America At Radical Summit In Mexico

Several left-wing American lawmakers traveled to Mexico City over the weekend to attend a summit aimed at challenging U.S. global dominance, organized by the director of an openly anti-capitalist and anti-American organization.

The second annual Panamerican Congress, which took place from Friday through Sunday, brought together leftist “delegates” from around the Americas, including Democrat lawmakers such as Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib of Minnesota, according to the event website. The summit was organized by the leader of Progressive International — a radical left-wing group that describes capitalism as a “virus” that must be “eradicated” — in partnership with Morena, Mexico’s ruling left-wing party. While the event’s website only offered vague themes such as “equality” and “solidarity,” David Adler, general coordinator for Progressive International and one of the summit’s main coordinators, said in a television interview ahead of the summit that the event aimed to “confront” what he described as rising authoritarian and fascist threats across the continent. He emphasized a goal of “inverting” global power dynamics by shifting decision-making authority away from Washington, D.C., and towards developing countries in the “Global South” region.

One of the most striking expressions of anti-American sentiment came from Rep. Delia Ramirez of Illinois, who delivered remarks during the event’s opening ceremony.

“I’m a proud Guatemalan before I’m an American,” declared Ramirez in Spanish, whose parents immigrated from Guatemala. The congresswoman — who represents segments of Chicago and its suburbs — further accused the U.S. of being  “addicted to war,” and prioritizing “imperialism, militarization, conquest, control, competition in its attempt at domination.”

Ramirez’s husband is in the U.S. illegally, according to her own website, which highlights her credentials as the “only Congressperson in a mixed-status marriage.” Ramirez’s office did not respond to multiple requests for comment by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

In addition to immigration, the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas also featured prominently at the event, repeatedly characterized as a genocide by event speakers.

Omar, one of Congress’s most vocal critics of Israel, spoke at a panel titled “Visions for the World,” where she discussed the Palestinian cause, according to Adler. Omar was removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee in 2023 due to repeated anti-Semitic remarks.

Tlaib, Omar’s fellow “Squad” member who shares a history of antisemitism, received a standing ovation at the summit as she was hailed by Mauricio Jaramillo Jassir, Colombia’s deputy minister of multilateral affairs, as a “symbol of resistance” against fascism and credited with leading efforts to advance the Palestinian cause in the U.S.

Other Democrat delegates to the event include Reps. Ayanna Presley of Massachusetts, Summer Lee of Pennsylvania and Jesús Gilberto García of Illinois, who are all members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. The offices of Omar, Tlaib, Presley, Lee and García did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

“These Democrats’ comments are despicable and underscore their commitment to putting Americans last,” White House spokesperson Liz Huston told the DCNF. “In stark contrast, President Trump is working tirelessly to secure peace deals, deport illegal alien criminals, and advance America’s interests at home and abroad.” (RELATED: Political Violence Surging Under Trump Isn’t Exactly ‘Far-Right’ After All)

Progressive International describes the U.S. as the “lynchpin” of imperial violence, accusing it of having “destroyed nation after nation, leaving a trail of violence and sorrow in their wake.” At the same time, the group downplays the threat posed by communist countries like China and advocates for the Global South to reduce dependence on the U.S. in favor of closer ties with China.

Members of Progressive International include groups associated with pro-Hamas activism, such as the Palestinian Youth Movement and the National Students for Justice in Palestine, as well as the Democratic Socialists of America. Progressive International did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

Meanwhile, Adler criticized President Donald Trump’s tariffs as an “imperialist tool of the United States,” and said the Panamerican Congress would provide a forum to coordinate a “collective strategy” against what he characterized as the coercive policies of the Trump administration.

Trump granted Mexico a 90-day extension to negotiate a trade deal with the U.S. following what he called a “very successful” phone call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who belongs to the Morena party. Sheinbaum herself made an appearance at the event.

Gerardo Fernández Noroña, president of the Mexican Senate and member of Morena, denounced what he called the “faces of fascism” in his remarks, singling out the “persecution of migrants in the United States.” Noroña condemned the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown as “unjust,” and claimed that people were being “persecuted just for being a migrant” and “for the color of your skin or nationality.”

Neither Sheinbaum’s office nor Morena responded to the DCNF’s request for comment.
