'I Hate My Party': Dem C-SPAN Callers Torch Democrats

Democratic C-SPAN callers rebuked their own party on Monday during a segment about whether they were pleased with its trajectory.
An AP-NORC poll published on Sunday found that 35% of Democrats used negative terms to describe their party, while just 23% used positive terms. On “Washington Journal,” three out of four Democratic callers expressed pessimism about their party in one segment, each citing different reasons. “I can’t claim to be any kind of an expert, but I’ve been a Democrat for a few years now. Used to be a Republican back when George W. Bush was president, but he basically showed me that I wasn’t going to be able to stick with that party,” a Maryland caller named Will said. “I think the Democrats almost need to stop bashing against [President Donald] Trump so much and start focusing really on some of those things that [Democratic New Jersey Sen.] Cory Booker was talking about —about health care, about the way the immigrants have been treated. And I do like also some of the things [former Chicago Mayor] Rahm Emanuel has said. And I like his approach as well.”
The caller also blamed the Democratic Party’s struggles on former President Joe Biden’s decision to run for reelection before finally dropping out on July 21, 2024.
“A lot of the problems are self-inflicted. And they need to step back, look at themselves and I don’t even think that really continually bashing Trump is most effective,” he said. “Focus on all the other issues.”
The caller further advised his party to prioritize tariffs rather than attacking Trump constantly.
The next Democratic caller, Frank from Staten Island, condemned his party for moving too far left.
“I’m registered Democrat, but I hate my party. I haven’t voted for a Democrat really in the elections in quite a while. And yes, I voted Republican many times because I like the policies better. Democrats have had terrible policies,” Frank said. “And now we have the rise of the so-called progressives. They’re really regressives. People like the Squad and [Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria] Ocasio-Cortez [AOC] and now [Zohran] Mamdani, who might become the mayor of New York City — he’s a proven socialist and Marxist as well as an antisemite.”
“This is … really terrible. The things that they actually believe in do not really help the people at all,” he continued. “They don’t understand markets. I believe in capitalism.”
He added that he chose to be a Democrat in the 1980s because he believed the party was more pro-free speech than the Republican Party.
“And now it’s many years later and I’m not happy with my party at all. And they lost me. But I’m not going to change. I liked the primaries,” he said. “I voted for Biden against [independent Vermont Sen. Bernie] Sanders. Sanders is terrible — another one who wants to bring socialism to the United States.”
While a third Democratic caller, Bruce from Oklahoma, said he was “very satisfied with the Democratic Party and the current leadership” because they are fighting Republicans and “offering solutions,” a fourth also criticized his party based on his opinion that it is too weak.
“I’m registered Democrat, but very disillusioned with the Democratic Party. I am registered with Democrats because I can’t vote in the primaries if I am not,” the fourth caller, Bill from Pennsylvania, said. “The reason I am disappointed with the Democratic Party is they’re not showing enough strength.”
In contrast to Frank, Bill said he wanted the Democratic Party to follow the lead of the far-left.
“Democrats need to show more of a spine. They need to show more interest in working people instead of saying they are for working people,” he said. “And if they would listen to what AOC and Bernie Sanders are saying — this is what many people want, more progressive ideas. And this is especially what young people want. Young people don’t want the statements by [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer.”
Moreover, The Wall Street Journal, CNN and Gallup all recently conducted polling finding that the Democratic Party has record-low favorability.
