Scott Jennings Doesn't Sit Back And Let CNN Commentator 'Lie' About Trump's Record

CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings called out contributor Maria Cardona point-blank on Thursday as she made several false accusations against President Donald Trump’s administration.
In response to a CNN/SSRS poll finding that Democrats’ favorability rating is at 28%, Cardona claimed on “CNN News Central” that Trump had “betrayed” Americans by raising the prices of groceries and gas and by taking away Medicare. Jennings scoffed at these claims and said that Cardona admitted that Democrats need to “pretend” they are not in their own party to win elections.
“The one thing that [Americans] are seeing is that Donald Trump has completely betrayed the American people and the working class voters, middle class families. They gave their support and trusted him to bring down the costs of groceries, gas and rent. He has done completely the opposite [by] taking away Medicare and Medicaid from them and that is going to be a winning message for Democrats going into the [midterm] election,” Cardona said.
“How could you unpack every lie that was just told in the last 20 seconds? I will just point out, your Democratic strategist this morning, my friend Maria said the key to winning in the midterms is for Democrats to pretend that they’re not in the Democratic Party. That ought to tell you everything you need to know about how the party’s faring today,” Jennings responded. WATCH:
Inflation has slowed throughout Trump’s second term thus far, as the Consumer Price Index (CPI) slowed to its lowest level since February 2021 in April. The CPI has continued to bode well for American consumers in May and June, as did the producer price index (PPI), which was below expectations on a year-over-year basis when food, energy and trade are taken out of the equation.
While food prices are expected to rise by 2.9% in 2025, the potential increases will rise considerably less in comparison to previous years, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The cost of eggs, which had previously surged from inflation and the widespread avian flu, dramatically decreased from its peak of $8.23 in March to its current price of $2.94, according to Trading Economics.
The price of gas has also decreased under Trump, as the cost of regular gas dropped from an average of $3.51 in July 2024 to $3.16 currently, according to AAA. Furthermore, the national median rent increased by 0.2% in June, which is down from the 0.7% increase from the previous year.
Cardona also accused the “Big, Beautiful Act,” which Trump signed into law on July 4, of stripping away Medicaid from lower class and older Americans due to the changes that the legislation is making to the program. The legislation only takes Medicaid away from able-bodied Americans between the ages of 19-64 who are not looking for work in an attempt to encourage employment and reduce program spending.
