Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley explained on Fox News Tuesday what message the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) must take from President Donald Trump’s success in the Middle East, where he orchestrated a peace deal between Israel and Iran.

Trump announced on Monday that Israel and Iran reached a ceasefire deal, just two days after the U.S. attacked Iran’s nuclear facilities. During an appearance on “Jesse Watters Primetime,” Hawley pointed out what he called the broader impact of Trump’s strategy.

“The Europeans now need to listen to him really closely when he tells them it’s time for them to do more in their own defense in Europe. This is this big message to NATO. They need to step up,” Hawley said. “They need to start paying their way. They need to increase their defense spending. They need to get serious about what they’re doing.”

Hawley said Trump has demonstrated a commitment to national security and knows how to secure deals and achieve peace.

“The United States has just demonstrated under Trump, we’re serious about our national security. We know how to take it seriously. Trump knows how to get a deal. He knows how to get peace. The Europeans need to pay attention. They need to start doing more,” Hawley said.

“He’s doing everything that he said that he was going to do. I mean how can you argue with the result here? How can you argue with the fact that the guy has just brought peace to a region that’s desperately in need of it? I mean, again, sounds like a citation to a Nobel Peace Prize to me,” Hawley said.

As of Tuesday, the ceasefire holds. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared Monday that Iran had not agreed to a formal ceasefire but would stop military action if Israel halted its operations by 4 a.m. Tehran time.

Just before the 4 a.m. deadline, Iran fired missiles into Beersheba, killing at least four civilians, as reported by The New York Post. Israel responded with limited strikes on Iranian targets, but Trump publicly urged restraint, warning Israel “not to drop the bomb.” His intervention pushed both sides to stand down, allowing a shaky ceasefire to take hold.

Trump posted a message from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Tuesday, praising him for securing major defense spending increases from alliance members. Trump shared the message Tuesday before departing for a NATO summit in the Netherlands, following a ceasefire between Israel and Iran that remained intact after recent missile exchanges.
