Florida AG Proposes ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ For Illegal Aliens

Florida’s Attorney General James Uthmeier proposed a new detention center for illegal aliens located at an abandoned airport in the middle of the Everglades.
“This is an old, virtually abandoned airport facility right in the middle of the Everglades,” Uthmeier told Florida’s Voice in an interview published Thursday.
“Florida’s been leading on immigration enforcement, supporting the Trump administration and ICE efforts to detain and deport criminal aliens,” he said.

“If somebody were to get out, there’s nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Only the alligators and pythons are waiting. That’s why I like to call it ‘Alligator Alcatraz,’” – Florida Attorney General… pic.twitter.com/UtNNLFoEfb

Uthmeier told Florida’s Voice that Republican Florida Governor Ron Desantis tasked state leaders with identifying locations to temporarily detain illegal migrants.
“I call it ‘Alligator Alcatraz,'” Uthmeier said.
The miles-long area is surrounded by the Everglades, making it virtually impossible to hide, according to Uthmeier.
“People get out. There’s not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons. Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide,” Uthmeier said in the interview.
Uthmeier added that the facility could be ready to go in 30 to 60 days.
If approved, the detention facility would become Florida’s largest immigration detention facility, Fox Business reported Tuesday.
Uthmeier’s proposal comes as the Trump Administration cracks down on illegal immigration, with ICE raids occurring across the country. (RELATED: Trump Admin Let Zero Illegals Into The US In May)
“This administration has seen the fastest improvement in American border security of all time,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) posted to X Tuesday.
Florida has been the site of recent deportation operations.
In April, authorities launched a four-day operation that arrested almost 800 illegal aliens, including alleged MS-13 gang members and convicted murderers, according to Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin.
The state also enacted legislation in 2025 requiring state and local law enforcement agencies to help with ICE efforts, according to Desantis.
“Alligator Alcatraz. We’re ready to go,” Uthmeier told Florida’s Voice.
