Dan Turrentine Warns Democrats Have ‘A Lot’ To Be ‘Worried About’

Former Democratic strategist Dan Turrentine said on Thursday that Democrats should be concerned following a flood of reports detailing chaos and dysfunction inside the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
On “The Morning Meeting,” host Mark Halperin read three headlines on the topic and asked Turrentine whether or not there was content in the articles that Democrats should “be worried about.” The former Democratic strategist responded that there was “a lot in those pieces that I would be worried about.” (RELATED: Democrats Seriously Want New Party Leaders, Survey Says)

“Look at these headlines about the Democratic Party,” Halperin said. “Politico: ‘Weak,’ ‘whiny’ and ‘invisible’ regarding the DNC chair Ken Martin. Here’s The New York Times … ‘The D.N.C. Is in Chaos and Desperate for Cash.’ And here’s The Washington Post: ‘Democrats want to fight Trump, but they can’t stop fighting each other.'”
Turrentine highlighted the financial issues the DNC is facing, which the NYT reported on Wednesday.
“We’ve always talked about this: the job of the chairman is to raise money and then use it to build infrastructure and kind of have a pot of cash for campaigns to use to support them in the midterms and for the president,” he said. “It is being reported that the Republican National Committee has $68 million on hand and the DNC has $18 million. We have had 2:1, 3:1 cash on hand advantages the last six or seven years, and now we are staring at a 3:1 disadvantage,” he continued. “And that’s a huge problem, the stories are saying the committee’s thinking of borrowing money. And that has not happened in over 25 years.”
The former Democratic strategist also said his party is struggling with voter registration compared to Republicans.
“Voter registration numbers continue to be terrible for the Democratic Party. They continue to be very strong for the Republican Party. So money and infrastructure are the two big things that you’re supposed to be doing,” he said. “And then just the other thing is it is not good when you have people like Donna Brazile and others saying … for those who don’t know, she is a very prominent black figure in the Democratic Party going back to when she ran Al Gore’s campaign in 2000 — she was like, ‘He’s not my cup of tea basically and like I don’t want to be his friend.'”
Brazile was formerly a DNC chair and is presently a member of the committee, according to the NYT.
“[Martin] has his own inner circle,” she told the NYT. “I’m not in it, and I don’t want to be in it.”
Democrats are growing increasingly agitated by Martin’s leadership and worsening internal discord within the DNC, Politico reported on Thursday.
One anonymous DNC member told Politico they believe Martin — who was elected as chair in February — appears “weak and whiny.” Meanwhile, another anonymous DNC member told the outlet the DNC chairman has been “invisible,” adding that his “early tenure has been disappointing.”
An anonymous Democratic strategist told Politico that the DNC is more weak than they have ever witnessed.
“The DNC is weaker than I have ever seen it … They have shown zero ability to chart a post-24 vision for Democrats,” the Democratic strategist said. “The longtime leaders of the teachers and state and local employee unions couldn’t in good faith continue to rubber-stamp what was going on with the DNC.”
Moreover, the Post also reported on Wednesday that top Democrats are concerned with Martin’s leadership. Certain Democrats indicated his style was suppressing differing viewpoints and declining to make necessary changes.
