‘Did I Miss Something?’: Charlamagne Can’t Wrap His Head Around Trump’s Reason For Deploying National Guard

Radio host Charlamagne tha God on Monday expressed ignorance of the violence that caused President Donald Trump to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles amid riots over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.
Riots first erupted on Friday after ICE raids in the Los Angeles region, leading to violent clashes between federal immigration officers and rioters, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Charlamagne, on “The Breakfast Club,” said he was unaware of any violence occurring before Trump deployed the National Guard, which arrived on Sunday. “Trump really wasted no time doing the worst of everything folks thought he would. Like, you can’t put the military on protesters,” Charlamagne said. “Did I miss something? Were they not being peaceful? Because I didn’t hear about any ruckus or violence until the National Guard showed up.”
Co-host DJ Envy responded that he saw a video of “a protester throwing rocks or bricks at cars,” saying he thought they were agents driving by.
Despite the mention of violence, Charlamagne still questioned the move.
“But did that call for the National Guard?” he asked.
Federal agents conducting ICE operations arrested more than 100 illegal immigrants, such as individuals with gang and drug trafficking allegations, sparking significant unrest. Trump on Saturday announced the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles after two days of violent clashes.
The DHS released a Saturday statement alleging rioters “assaulted ICE law enforcement officers, slashed tires, defaced buildings, and taxpayer funded property” on Friday.
Despite the violent and destructive nature of the demonstrations, legacy media outlets chose not to describe them as “riots,” instead calling them “protests.”
Clashes between federal immigration officers and demonstrators grew even more intense on Saturday, leading to fires, broken windows and injuries.
The White House said on Saturday that National Guard deployment was intended to “address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester” in California.
