Brit Hume discussed President Donald Trump’s approach to negotiating peace in Ukraine on Fox News Wednesday, suggesting that the president has crucial leverage that could be used more effectively to pressure Russia and influence the course of the war.

Trump described his 75-minute call with Putin on Wednesday as a “good conversation” but said it wouldn’t lead to immediate peace, with a covert Ukrainian drone attack and stalled U.S.-Iran nuclear talks complicating prospects for resolution. During an appearance on “Special Report with Bret Baier,” Hume said Trump has yet to tap into some potent tools at his disposal that can be used as “leverage” to stop the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“The president, meanwhile, seems to think that somewhere along the way here, he’ll be able to broker a deal. I think it’s a tough situation, and I think the president does have leverage, which he could use. Secondary sanctions on countries buying oil from Russia could choke off the means, the funds by which he’s [Putin’s] financing this war,” Hume said.

Hume mentioned the ongoing support for Ukraine’s military.

“There are other measures he could take as well, including bolstering the military equipment we’ve sent to Ukraine, which they have used, considering how small they are compared to Russia, to great effect,” Hume said. “So there are options available to the president. He seems so far disinclined to use them.” (RELATED: Brit Hume Says Ukraine Exposed ‘Embarrassing’ Russian Weakness)

Ukraine and Russia made no significant progress in peace talks on Monday in Istanbul, Turkey, despite the ongoing conflict that has claimed countless lives over the past three years. The front lines remain largely unchanged. Vice President JD Vance suggested in April that the U.S. might need to consider stepping away from peace negotiations if both Moscow and Kiev fail to make meaningful progress toward resolving the war.

Iran has supported Russia in its military efforts, providing missiles to the front lines in exchange for Russian fighter jets in 2024.

On Monday, reports emerged indicating that the Trump administration might allow Iran to enrich some uranium as part of a proposed nuclear deal. However, Trump dismissed these claims later that evening, reaffirming his stance against any enrichment. In response, Iran rejected the U.S. proposal on Wednesday, vowing to continue enriching uranium for its nuclear ambitions.
