Supergirl Trailer Just Landed: Is this the DCU Fans Wanted?

The first teaser for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has been released. The short preview offers a first real look at Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl in what looks like a Guardians of the Galaxy knock-off set to the sound of Blondie’s 1980 hit single from Call Me. Does this subvert your expectations or just feel like James Gunn doing a female version of Will Smith’s Hancock?
The teaser suggests a distinct tone for the film that separates Supergirl from her famous cousin, starting out with a teenage Supergirl taking some drunken glee at Krypto pissing on a newspaper article about her cousin Superman. Alcock’s version appears more grounded and skeptical compared to the hopeful personality often associated with Superman, played by David Corenswet in the new DC Universe. The muted color palette of the teaser contrasts with the brighter imagery seen in Superman, hinting that this story will take a grittier approach before the setting expands into outer space.
What they don’t get is that if everything is “deconstruction”, “irreverent” and “subverting expectations” then nothing is.
You have to have an established baseline for this to work.
Clever tagline and tone….as a counter to the 1978 Superman. But since we all saw James Gunn’s… pic.twitter.com/81oquY4LCz

James Gunn, who oversees DC Studios along with Peter Safran, has said each DCU film will have its own identity rather than follow a single formula. The early footage from Supergirl seems to support that claim, giving a preview of a character-driven science fiction story instead of a standard superhero narrative.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be directed by Craig Gillespie, known for I, Tonya and Cruella, with a script by Ana Nogueira. The cast includes Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, and Jason Momoa as Lobo. Krypto, Supergirl’s canine companion, is also expected to appear.

The movie will draw from controversial writer Tom King’s comic arc of the same name, which follows Supergirl on a journey through distant worlds as she seeks justice for a tragic event. The film is part of DC’s upcoming “Gods and Monsters” chapter and is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 26, 2026. Early reaction online has been divided, with some praising the serious tone and others uncertain about the creative direction.
The full trailer may clarify how this version of Supergirl fits into the developing DCU lineup. No news yet on when that will arrive.
