Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., told Newsmax on Thursday that rhetoric encouraging violence against President Donald Trump has become normalized, warning that anti-American propaganda amplified through social media is fueling threats against the president and other public officials.
Appearing on "National Report," Tenney pointed to an Iranian mural depicting Trump in a coffin alongside the words "We will kill Trump," saying it reflects a broader effort to incite hatred toward the United States and its allies.
"Well, look, there's violent rhetoric and threats against the president, obviously, but also a lot of members of Congress and a lot of other key officials because this is what these people do," she said.
Tenney argued that America's adversaries are exploiting online platforms to spread anti-U.S. messaging around the globe.
"Remember, this propaganda often gets translated through social media and other areas throughout the United States and the world," she said. "And that's how they use this to create anti-Israel and anti-American sentiment."
Tenney also criticized what she called a dramatic shift among Democrats on support for Israel, citing Wednesday's House votes.
"I just want to mention this because it was stunning yesterday to see over 100 Democrats vote to defund Israel, our closest ally in the Middle East," she said. "And many of them are members of Congress, including [Rep.] Nancy Pelosi[, D-Calif.], who have always been supporters of Israel."
"This is a stunning change in the Democratic Party, which shows they've been taken over by extreme Islamists, the Marxist parts of their party," Tenney added.
The New York Republican said social media has helped spread propaganda that radicalizes political activists across the country.
"Just look at New York City, look at who's leading — or at least competitive — in the polls in Michigan and even in some of the more rural areas," she said. "This propaganda, this era of social media, has been able to reach a lot of people, and they've got them fired up."
Tenney warned that calls for violence against Trump embolden extremists and encourage more aggressive behavior.
"Killing Trump just incites a lot of the base," she said. "I have people talking about killing Trump up in upstate New York."
Tenney said activists involved in the "No Kings" and "resist" movements have embraced increasingly inflammatory rhetoric.
"These people are thriving on this kind of thing," she said. "They have normalized this kind of rhetoric and behavior, sadly, and it's unfortunate that we're seeing this in the United States as well."
