Border Patrol Reports Zero Illegal Alien Releases for 13th Straight Month as Trump Border Crackdown Drives Crossings to 30-Year Low

The Trump administration’s border security policies continue to produce historic results, with federal officials announcing that the U.S. Border Patrol has now gone 13 consecutive months without releasing a single illegal alien into the interior of the United States.
According to new data released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Border Patrol recorded zero releases through May 2026, marking more than a year since the administration ended the controversial “catch-and-release” policies that became synonymous with the Biden era.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin credited President Donald Trump’s leadership for what administration officials describe as the most secure southern border in modern American history.
“Thirteen straight months of ZERO releases at the border. Under President Donald Trump’s leadership, we are delivering the most secure border in American history. The days of catch and release are over,” Mullin said. “We are enforcing the nation’s laws and quickly sending illegal aliens back to their home countries, ensuring the safety and sovereignty of our nation.”
CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott echoed those remarks, pointing to record-low illegal crossings and aggressive enforcement measures as evidence that the administration’s strategy is working.
“This milestone, coupled with historically low illegal crossings, demonstrates our unwavering commitment to securing our nation,” Scott said. “Our robust enforcement policies are working, and we are delivering unprecedented results in border security, drug interdiction, and trade enforcement.”
The numbers underscore a dramatic reversal from the border crisis that unfolded under former President Joe Biden.
In May 2026, Border Patrol agents apprehended 9,998 illegal aliens along the southwest border, a staggering 94 percent decline from the monthly average recorded during the previous administration. The figure was also 96 percent below the peak monthly totals seen during Biden’s presidency, when crossings routinely exceeded 200,000 per month.
Officials noted that the total number of apprehensions recorded during the entire month of May 2026 was lower than the number of illegal aliens encountered in just three days during May 2024.
On a daily basis, Border Patrol averaged just 323 apprehensions in May, a figure that administration officials say is lower than the hourly apprehension rate experienced at the height of the Biden-era border surge.
The historic decline has pushed border activity to levels not seen in more than three decades. Fiscal year-to-date apprehensions through May 2026 were 26 percent lower than the average number of apprehensions recorded during an entire month between fiscal years 1992 and 2024.
The administration also highlighted major gains in drug interdiction efforts.
Nationwide seizures of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, and marijuana increased by 32 percent compared to May 2024. Fentanyl seizures reached 795 pounds in May alone, a 72 percent increase from the previous month. Fiscal year-to-date drug seizures are now running 56 percent higher than during the same period in fiscal year 2024.
The latest figures are likely to bolster the Trump administration’s argument that strict enforcement policies, rapid removals, and the end of catch-and-release have dramatically reduced illegal immigration while strengthening national security along the southern border.
