King Solomon Admits He May Have Plagiarized ‘Nothing New Under The Sun’

JERUSALEM — As he observed the temple scribes hard at work making official copies of the book of Ecclesiastes, King Solomon reportedly admitted that he may have plagiarized the bit about there being nothing new under the sun.

Solomon maintained that the text of Ecclesiastes, which serves as a philosophical exploration of the vanity of life and the need for God, was mostly original except for the part about there being nothing original.

"You know, logically, if there's nothing new under the sun then this isn't new either," the king said. "Not sure where I got it from, though. Maybe Phil. He's always saying stuff like that. Classic Phil."

That which has been is what will be,

That which is done is what will be done,

And there is nothing new under the sun.

Though Solomon, using the pseudonym Preacher, wrote under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, High Priest Zadok confirmed it was possible that the line could still have been plagiarized. "God works in mysterious ways," Zadok said by way of explanation. "I made up that phrase. Don't steal it."

Following news that a section of the book may have been plagiarized, the elders of the people assembled to discuss the matter further. As part of their deliberations, they called in a local prophet to help them understand if the work should be elevated to the level of scripture, to which the prophet answered, "Eh, it's fine. Copyright law hasn't been invented yet."

At publishing time, the people flocked to find Phil for more wisdom, only to learn he had been stealing from Solomon for years.
