This loft with a two-bedroom mezzanine level is on the fourth floor of a converted warehouse in Poplar, a neighborhood in East London.

The 19th-century warehouse, known as Limehouse Wharf, sits on the Limekiln Dock inlet near the northern bank of the River Thames. The industrial area, which borders Canary Wharf, was once a center of maritime trade and river commerce, with factories for rope-making and shipbuilding. The Limehouse neighborhood is now a bustling residential area boasting a mix of contemporary riverside apartments, converted warehouses and Georgian and Victorian terrace homes.

There are plenty of restaurants and bars, including The Grapes, one of the oldest pubs in London, and Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen & Bar - Limehouse. There are also shops and markets, including the Jubilee Place Mall in Canary Wharf and the historic Billingsgate Market.

London City Airport, which has a range of international flights, is about 20 minutes away by public transportation. London’s major international airports, including Heathrow, are over an hour away via public transportation.

Size: 2,510 square feet

Price per square foot: $800

Indoors: The warehouse retains its industrial heritage, with exposed brick, timber beams and metal window frames. This loft space is currently arranged as two discrete areas: One has an airy, open-plan living space with high ceilings, exposed beams and a mezzanine bedroom; the other is a self-contained studio space with a kitchenette, a bathroom and a sleeping area.

The open living area has two skylights, four arched windows, a dining area, a kitchen and doors opening to a Juliet balcony. There is a bathroom with a shower and a laundry/utility room with a metal-framed window facing the interior.

A wood staircase ascends to the mezzanine level, which has a study, a bedroom with a windowed dormer and a bathroom with a half-moon window overlooking the living space.

The entrance hall leads to the studio apartment, which has a cavernous living space with two skylights. Off the living space is a kitchen with a pantry, as well as a study formerly used as a darkroom. A curved wooden staircase ascends to the mezzanine, with a bedroom, a bathroom and a window overlooking the living space.

Outdoor space: The loft has a Juliet balcony overlooking a pebble beach on a small inlet off the River Thames.

Costs: The annual service charge on this property is approximately $4,230 (£3,135), and the council tax is about $2,900 (£2,144). The amount a buyer would pay in stamp duty at the time of purchase is $126,500 (£93,750).

This five-bedroom, four-bath house was redeveloped on the former London estate of Sir Henry Tate, the Victorian sugar magnate and art patron, in Streatham in South London. After the property sold in 1998, developers built apartments and new housing on the site, naming the residential community the Henry Tate Mews.

The Streatham neighborhood, about five miles south of Charing Cross, attracts young professionals and families with its charming apartments and Victorian and Edwardian terrace houses. The area offers one of the longest high streets in Britain, with about 400 shops, including independent boutiques and cafes as well as supermarkets and chain stores.

The easiest international airport to reach from the Streatham area via public transportation is Gatwick, which is about an hour away. By car, both Gatwick and London City Airport are about 40 minutes away, and Heathrow is just under an hour.

Size: 3,518 square feet

Price per square foot: $575

Indoors: The front door opens to an entrance hall and a door to the home’s architectural centerpiece: the original double-height billiard room, which is doused in natural light from original skylights encased in heavy wooden beams. In the 2000 redevelopment, a mezzanine level was added to one end of the billiards room, forming a cozy sitting area accessed by a spiral staircase. The room has a fireplace and 19th-century details, including fanlights, elaborate decorative plaster friezes and cornices.

A contemporary eat-in kitchen with a breakfast bar sits off the entrance hall near a bathroom and utility room. Five bedrooms, many with en suite bathrooms, can be found on the second and third floors.

Outdoor space: The house has two patios flanking the former billiards room, and a balcony off the main bedroom. Residents have access to about eight acres of private grounds, including well-maintained lawns, a mature orchard, a pond, woodland areas, a Victorian folly and a grotto. There is a private double garage with electric-vehicle charging and off-street parking.

Costs: The annual service charge is approximately $4,720 (£3,500). A buyer would pay a stamp duty of $126,500 (£93,750) at the time of purchase.

This four-bedroom, three-bath house in Streatham is built into a hill and has two large terraces with views of Hillside Gardens Park.

Hillside Gardens Park, which has tennis courts and a playground, is one of several green spaces in the neighborhood, including Tooting Bec Common, with its well-known lido, or open-air pool. The Rookery, a walled garden on the site of a former Victorian spa, is another hidden gem.

Gatwick is about an hour away via public transportation. By car, both Gatwick and London City Airport are about 40 minutes away, and Heathrow is an hour away.

Size: 3,183 square feet

Price per square foot: $675

Indoors: Guests enter the house on the second floor, where an entrance hall is flanked by the kitchen and a living room, both of which access the terrace. The living room has a large bay window, and the kitchen has stairs ascending to the roof terrace. Also on the second floor are three bedrooms, including the main bedroom, which has a large bay window, sliding doors to the terrace and an en suite bathroom. Another bedroom has a fireplace and a bay window.

The lower level has a double workshop/garage, a study, two living rooms and a bedroom with a bathroom. Most of the lower-level rooms have doors opening to the rear of the house, which can be accessed via a gated entrance. There is also a second kitchen and ample storage.

Outdoor space: The house has a roof terrace with views of leafy Hillside Gardens Park toward Crystal Palace. There is also a terrace with a park view running the length of the house on the second floor, bringing the total roof terrace space to 2,600 square feet.

Costs: The annual council tax is $3,800 (£2,822). Stamp duty paid by the buyer would be about $141,892 (£105,150).
