To most Americans, a significant drop in the number of people on food stamps is a positive development. But to the left-wing outrage mob, it’s cause for all-out panic and one of the most absurd fits of anti-Trump hysteria to date.

According to recent government data, as of July 1, approximately 4.5 million fewer people are enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) compared to the same time last year – a reduction of about 11 percent. Still, the nearly 42 million people enrolled in SNAP is much higher than the 35 million on the dole in 2019.

To hear liberals tell it, there is only one explanation for this shift: the Trump administration is purposely and heartlessly stripping needy Americans of their benefits and starving people to death.

“Kids are going HUNGRY because Trump and Republicans chose tax cuts for their billionaire donors over funding for food assistance,” House Democrats posted on X. Katie Bergh, an activist with the left-wing Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, called the drop in SNAP enrollment a “crisis” and alleged that “many eligible families are losing SNAP because they can’t navigate new bureaucratic obstacles.”

Axios, meanwhile, reported on “strained food pantries” and quoted one advocacy group leader who said, “Charitable food assistance was never designed to replace SNAP.” (That, of course, gets it exactly backwards – federal food stamps should never have been designed to replace local aid.)

These are just a few of many examples of the full-on liberal meltdown over fewer people taking government handouts. But this “reporting” intentionally obscures the real reason for the drop in enrollment; namely, that the Trump administration is cracking down on welfare fraud and requiring able-bodied recipients to do a bare minimum amount of work to receive their benefits.

The One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB), which President Trump signed into law last year, specifically made three major changes to SNAP that are now showing up in enrollment data.

First, there are now stronger protections to ensure that illegal aliens and other ineligible non-citizens do not abuse the program. Trump and congressional Republicans rightly recognized that it is wrong to require American citizens to fork over their hard-earned tax dollars to pay for food for individuals who are either here illegally or came to the United States through legal channels but cannot provide for themselves.

Second, the OBBB implemented a new mandate requiring SNAP recipients aged 18 to 64 to either work at least 80 hours per month or participate in a job training program. In addition to gainful employment, recipients can fulfill their work requirement by volunteering at their local library, cleaning up the parks, or doing any number of other worthy civic activities.

That seems like a reasonable deal – taxpayers put food on someone’s table, and the recipient gives back to the community in return. There are exceptions to these work requirements for pregnant women, students, parents of children younger than 14, and those caring for the disabled or who have special needs themselves, according to an explainer from the State of Illinois.

Third, the OBBB requires states to pay more for food stamps based on their “administrative error rate.” In other words, states that doled out money and frequently made mistakes will now be required to pay for their negligence out of their own pockets, as AMAC Newsline previously reported.

The liberal voices now spreading panic about the drop in SNAP enrollment conveniently leave these three key changes out of their diatribes, instead falsely claiming that the Trump administration has simply “cut SNAP funding.” But as The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board put it, people are dropping off SNAP for one of three main reasons which directly correspond to the above listed changes.

“One: Their earnings increase. That’s good news,” they wrote. “Two: They refuse either to work, look for a job, or volunteer at a place like the local library part-time. In that case, the correct moral and fiscal policy is for the safety net to stop subsidizing that choice.”

And finally, there are fewer fraudsters in the system. “The Agriculture Department collected data from 28 states and says it found nearly 186,000 dead recipients,” the Journal reported. “Some 355,000 recipients were enrolled in more than one state.” (Obamacare enrollment is similarly down because of the Trump administration’s war on waste, fraud, and abuse, as AMAC Newsline previously reported.)

In short, in the vast majority of cases, the individuals no longer on SNAP either should never have been on the program in the first place or refused to work or volunteer just 20 hours per week.

Changes to the food stamp law may also help the country address the crisis of a historically low labor force participation rate, which now sits around 61.5 percent, according to CNBC. While the unemployment rate looks at how many people are looking for work but cannot find a job, the labor force participation rate looks at all people in the country who can work but are not working.

The rate is particularly concerning for men, hovering around 66 percent, drastically down from a high of nearly 87 percent in the 1940s.

Likewise ignored by the media amid all the clamoring about supposedly hungry kids are the myriad other food programs available to the poor. Illinois, for instance, lists “Women, Infants, and Children,” “School Breakfast and Lunch Program,” “Afterschool Snack and Supper Program,” and “Senior Food Box,” as just a few options for the truly needy.

The liberal freakout also unintentionally reveals just how much contempt leftists have for their fellow citizens. None of the people lamenting declining SNAP enrollment ever stop to consider whether any of those individuals simply don’t need the program anymore because they can provide for themselves. Leftists automatically view less government dependency as a bad thing, categorically rejecting the idea that Americans have agency and the ability to improve their own economic fortunes.

To the leftist mind warped by victim propaganda, fewer people on food stamps is a crisis. To everyone else, fewer Americans dependent on government handouts sounds a lot more like progress.
