He railed against the price of eggs on the campaign trail, blaming Joe Biden for one of the symbols of inflation ravaging the US.

Now, JD Vance can dodge price fluctuations with a chicken coop of his own.

Mr Vance has installed a high-end home for a flock of chickens at his official residence at the US Naval Observatory.

The new henhouse has been designed to mirror the Victorian-style residence where vice-presidents have lived for decades.

Featuring a round turret, green door and faux slate roof, the white structure is surrounded by gravel and potted plants and sits within a fenced enclosure with views of the national cathedral.

Mr Vance and his wife Usha, who is pregnant with their fourth child, were photographed petting one of the newborn chicks as pictures were released of their new coop.

The coop was donated by Carolina Coops, a company based in North Carolina that is known for its "premium" chicken houses and has a large social media following. It was built without taxpayer money, according to a source familiar with the project.

"It's something I thought was amazing to do for this country," said Matthew DuBoise, the company's owner and founder. "It's a place of history and a place of significance."

Mr Vance frequently cited the price of eggs as evidence of inflation on the 2024 campaign trail, often using grocery-store visits to attack Mr Biden's economic record.

In one appearance, Mr Vance joked that his two young sons "eat about 14 eggs every single morning", a claim that drew some scrutiny but became one of his more memorable campaign anecdotes.

According to a spokesman, Mr Vance plans to help care for the chickens personally, while his children have already named the newly arrived chicks.

Once fully grown, the hens are expected to provide eggs for the vice-president's family and others living and working at the Naval Observatory.

Backyard chickens have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity across the US in recent years.

A survey carried out by the American Pet Products Association in 2025 found that around 11 million American households kept chickens, reflecting growing interest in urban farming, home-grown food and self-sufficiency.

The Vances are also following a tradition of leaving their own mark on the vice-presidential residence.

Mr Biden added a heritage garden during his time as vice-president for the Obama administration and Karen Pence, the wife of Donald Trump's vice-president during his first term, introduced beehives to the grounds.

Kamala Harris redecorated parts of the house, including the library.
