Tech billionaire Elon Musk said he’s encouraged by the “good responses” he’s received so far to an email asking federal employees to detail their recent work efforts and suggested the employees who sent them be considered for promotion.

“A large number of good responses have been received already. These are the people who should be considered for promotion,” Musk, a special adviser to President Trump, wrote early Sunday in a post on his social platform X.

His post came in response to an earlier social media message in which he wrote, “Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week.”

“Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation,” he added.

The initial email, reviewed by The Hill, told federal employees to “please reply to this email with approx. 5 bullet points of what you accomplished last week.”

The email instructed employees to include their manager on their responses, not to send any classified information or attachments and to reply by 11:59 p.m. EST Monday.

Musk also amplified messages on social media suggesting the strategy of having employees respond with their work accomplishments is common practice in the private sector and asking why it would be controversial.

The new Trump administration strategy comes as Musk takes an outsize role in helping Trump reduce the size of the federal government and slash its workforce.
