A Democrat in Congress is vowing if Democrats gain control of the U.S. House, they will investigate the national celebrations of America’s 250th birthday organized by President Donald Trump, specifically because of its high-profile inclusion of Christianity.

U.S. Rep. Adelita Grijalva, D-Ariz., made the threat Friday on MS NOW’s “The Beat” broadcast with guest anchor Luke Russert.

Russert asked: “This iteration of America 250 – this Freedom 250 that Donald Trump and his cronies have engaged in – there is a really strong element of Christian nationalism that is meant to define what it means to be an American. Can you speak to that and what you guys uncovered?”

Grijalva responded: “Well, that’s incredibly problematic because our nation is built on, really, the contributions of immigrants, of people from all different countries, all different nationalities, and all different religions. We do not have an official religion in this country, nor do I believe we should. We are supposed to be this melting pot where everyone comes together and is stronger as a result of it.

“But under this administration, it is more about how Christian you are. You know, if you’re Catholic, you’re not Christian enough. If you’re Muslim, you’re not part of our – I mean, it’s like this sort of club of elitists, and they keep pushing people away and out of what is supposed to be a really solid celebration.

“Even some of the speakers who were speaking all spoke of religion, and not as much about what the contributions have been in our country. We could have had a true celebration of art, music, poetry – just a big, encompassing celebration of what it is to be an American and everyone who has contributed.

“But what it has been is an incredibly stifling hot environment that nobody is coming to because there’s really nothing to see there.”

Russert agreed with Grijalva, noting “one religion shouldn’t hijack an entire celebration of America.”

“Yeah, some of the earliest Americans were those who were fleeing religious persecution, and that’s been a long-standing tenet of our country’s success,” Russert said. “Also, the freedom of religion is guaranteed in the First Amendment. I could go on and on about how one religion shouldn’t hijack an entire celebration of America.

“Real quickly, trend lines are looking good for the Democrats to take back the House. Do you think this would be something that would be investigated if Democrats get the gavel back?”

Grijalva replied: “Oh, I believe it will be, yeah.”

On Independence Day, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted a video about the nation’s founding, saying the framers of the Constitution had “Christian moral imagination.”

“For 250 years, America has been the greatest nation on Earth – and with God’s grace, it will be for 250 more,” Rubio stated.

One self-described “proud MAGA patriot” on X noted Grijalva is “technically right that we don’t have a government-established church like the Church of England. But this nation WAS founded in Christianity.” The commenter added:

The Declaration of Independence declares that we are “endowed by our Creator” with unalienable rights.

The Founding Fathers’ moral and legal framework was rooted in Christian faith and Biblical principles.

Our presidents swear their oath on the Holy Bible.

Our national motto is “In God We Trust.”

America 250 should proudly celebrate that Christian heritage, not investigate it.

We will not let revisionists erase the faith that built this republic.
