Speaker of the House Mike Johnson says Republicans have to “go around” Democrats to pass the SAVE America Act, ensuring election integrity by requiring proof of identity and U.S. citizenship when registering to vote.
Appearing on “Sunday Morning Futures” with Maria Bartiromo on the Fox News Channel, Johnson said: “Election integrity is critical. It’s central. We talk about preserving the Republic, you got to have free and fair elections in order to do that.
“We can’t allow big blue states and crooked Democrat governors to try to steal elections away from us. This is a very important measure, a common sense one that the American people believe in and encourage and support.”

Noting the House of Representatives has passed the measure three times already, Johnson explained: “We’re gonna pass it again, and this time we’re gonna try to put it on a reconciliation bill. And the reason that’s so important … is it prevents the necessity of 60 votes in the Senate. The Democrats want no part of this.
“And remember, this is very basic stuff. We just want to make sure you have to have proof of citizenship to register to vote, and then show an ID when you turn out at the ballot box. These are 90-10 public-opinion issues and more than 70% of Democrats want to do it. But not the Democrats in the House and Senate. So we’ve got to go around them.”

He added: “The president and I laughed about it in the Oval last week. I told him, Mr. President, I don’t have any tattoos, but if I did, it’d say SAVE America on my shoulder.”
U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., has been leading a blockade of passing any legislation until the Senate finally approves the SAVE America Act.
“This is a PRIORITY,” she said.
Ref SAVE America + NDAA:
The Rules Committee can make the Amendment in Order.
I have already submitted both the amendment to attach SAVE America Act to rules but tomorrow I will also submit a Voter ID/Proof of Citizenship Amendment to the Rules Committee.

President Trump on Thursday indicated: “House Republicans should unify, and stop voting down ‘Rules’ or, threatening to do so. Giving power to the Radical Left Dumocrats in the House to control what goes up for a Vote will make our outcomes worse, not better. No more grandstanding, please! They are the Dumocrats, and we can’t let them WIN!”
When Johnson was asked about Luna’s efforts, the House speaker said: ‘I told Anna Paulina Luna and a couple other colleagues it makes no sense for us to shut down our good work in the House just because Senate Democrats refuse to do the people’s will. We’ve got a lot more to do. We gotta keep it going.”
His sentiment was echoed by House GOP Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain, R-Mich., who told Bartiromo: “We have business as Republicans that we need to get done and there is no place in the Republican Party for non-unity. So there’s no reason that you need to vote against the rule. Let Republicans do their business.

“And we have to remember as Republicans, we need to make progress. Shutting down the floor doesn’t make progress. I understand that we need to control what we need to control, and we need to influence the Senate. And I think that’s what Anna was trying to do, was influence the Senate. But at the end of the day, we got a lot of business we need to get done.”
Rep. Luna calls out the Senate for giving up on the SAVE America Act, and her message to Thune is what EVERYONE feels:
“It almost feels like the Senate has completely given up on it.”

President Trump last week announced he would not sign a bipartisan housing bill designed to lower the cost of housing until the SAVE America Act gets passed.
Johnson told Bartiromo on Sunday regarding that housing bill: “I’m gonna send the bill over to him. It’s passed by both chambers. I’m gonna send it to him on Monday and it will become law. I certainly want him to take the biggest, boldest marker that he has and do that big Trump signature proudly on that legislation because we’re delivering for the people and that’s what he wants to do.”
