Eleven people stabbed at Walmart in Michigan, suspect in custody
Eleven people were injured in a “random” stabbing at a Walmart in northern Michigan, on Saturday, with the suspect in custody.
At around 6 p.m. Eastern time, local police said they were investigating a “multiple stabbing incident” at a Walmart store in Traverse City, located around 140 miles north of Grand Rapids. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino also said FBI agents were on the scene to “provide any necessary support” to local police.
In a press conference addressing the incident, Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea said the suspect, a 42-year-old male and Michigan resident, began randomly attacking people near the checkout area of the store with a folding-style knife. He was taken into custody shortly after, with Shea adding that there was “citizen involvement” in assisting with the arrest.
“Eleven is 11 too many, but thank God it wasn’t more,” Shea said.
According to Munson Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in northern Michigan, 11 people were being treated at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, six of whom are in critical condition, while the other five are in serious condition.
