LA immigration protests LIVE: Civil war fears explode as 2,000 National Guard troops deployed

Americans fear civil war is beginning right before their eyes as LA protesters and police clash - and California Democrat Adam Schiff has even accused Donald Trump of wanting a reason to justify martial law.
Trump is deploying 2,000 National Guard troops as protesters seek to block federal immigration authorities from carrying out deportations.
In a directive Saturday, the President invoked a legal provision allowing him to deploy federal service members when there is ”a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States.”
Writing on X, one user said "sadly LA looks like a scene from the 2024 Civil War movie," while another user asked: "Is the US now in de facto civil war or is that not yet what they call it?"
Others said they fear LA is the "beginning" of a wider civil war across the U.S.
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Trump are publicly clashing about efforts taken to contain the protests, with Newsom even going as far as accusing Trump of "manufacturing a crisis."
This was echoed by Schiff, who wrote on social media: "There is nothing President Trump would like more than a violent confrontation with protestors to justify the unjustifiable — invocation of the Insurrection Act or some form of martial law."
Protests had been winding down after Saturday evening saw agents using tear gas, flash-bang explosives and pepper balls, while protesters hurled rocks and cement at Border Patrol vehicles. However, demonstrators are slated to gather again at LA's city hall from 2pm local time on Sunday, according to an X post from an account that goes by Anonymous, referring to the internet-based activist collective and movement known for its hacktivist activities. The mass protests first erupted near a Home Depot in the heavily Latino city of Paramount, south of Los Angeles on Saturday amid an immigration crackdown.
Federal agents were staging at a Department of Homeland Security office nearby when confrontations broke out. Tensions had already been high following a series of immigration raids the previous day. The weeklong tally of immigrant arrests in the city climbed past 100, including a prominent union leader who was arrested while protesting and accused of impeding law enforcement.

City of Glendale ends partnership with Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement
The California city of Glendale has reportedly ended its partnership with Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It was reported that the city, which housed federal immigration detainees since 2007, told the federal agencies that after "careful evaluation," they decided to end the partnership.
"The City of Glendale has made the decision to formally terminate its agreement with U.S. Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to house federal immigration detainees at the Glendale Police Department facility," a press release said. "This is a local decision and was not made lightly."
The releases stated, "The city recognizes that public perception of the ICE contract—no matter how limited or carefully managed, no matter the good—has become divisive." The city added that the decision was not "politically driven," either.
"The Glendale Police Department is trusted and supported by the residents and businesses, and in turn, our officers work every day to protect and serve with professionalism and care," the city said. "At this time, it is in our best interest not to allow that trust to be undermined."
Glendale's choice to end the partnership comes as riots have broken out in the streets of Paramount, California, as agents with ICE clash with citizens. The riots became even more enflamed when Donald Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to the area.

Elon Musk retweets Donald Trump in shocking U-turn
Tech billionaire Elon Musk was spotted retweeting a photo of U.S. President Donald Trump's Truth Social posts in a bizarre u-turn. Just days before, the two were seemingly at odds over Trump's "Big, beautiful bill."
The post demands that Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass should "apologize to the people of Los Angeles for the absolutely horrible job that they have done, and this now includes the ongoing L.A. riots." Trump added, These are not protesters, they are troublemakers and insurrectionists. Remember, NO MASKS!"
In addition to Trump, the former head of the Department of Government Efficiency also retweeted Vice President JD Vance, who also retweeted the Truth Social post. "This moment calls for decisive leadership. The president will not tolerate rioting and violence," Vance wrote.
Musk retweeted the sentiment and added two American flags. The posts caused many to question whether or not Musk and Trump had buried the hatchet.

Australian reporter shot with rubber bullets on air while covering LA protests
A shocking video on X shows an Australian reporter being shot at with rubber bullets while delivering a report on the ongoing clash between ICE and protesters. In a video uploaded to X, U.S. Correspondent Lauren Tomasi from 9News Australia is seen delivering her report.
During her report, the multiple gunshots can be heard as protesters against U.S. President Donald Trump's deportations scream and hurl insults at the government agents. At one point in the footage, Tomasi and her camera crew begin making their way to the police line, prompting an officer to raise his rifle and hit Tomasi in the leg.
Tomasi let out a scream as she grabbed her leg while her camera operator screamed at the cops. "You just shot the f******* reporter!" The camera then flips to show protesters as the operator asks Tomasiv if she is "okay."
"Yeah, I'm good," she responds. "I'm good."

Newsom dares Trump border czar 'arrest me'
California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a challenge to Donald Trump's border czar, Tom Homan. It was reported that, in response to Homan's threat to arrest himself and LA mayor Karen Bass, Newsom stated, "Tom, arrest me."
"He knows where to find me," Newsom said in an interview with NBC. In the interview, Newsom told the Trump official to leave alone the "poor people just trying to live their lives."
"These guys need to grow up. They need to stop, and we need to push back," Newsom added. "And I'm sorry to be so clear, but that kind of bloviating is exhausting. So, Tom, arrest me. Let's go."
During a news conference on Sunday, Bass told reporters that she was in direct contact with Homan. However, Newsom said that he was not in talks with Homan.
It was also reported that Newsom called Trump a "stone-cold liar" and that he planned to sue the administration. "There's a protocol; there's a process. He didn't care about that. And the worst part? He completely lied," Newsom said.

Donald Trump heads to Camp David to meet with Military leaders
U.S. President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he would be heading to Camp David in Maryland with several military officials. Addressing reporters before boarding Air Force One, Trump said that he has not ruled out invoking the Insurrection Act, which could allow the military to be deployed domestically.
“We’re going up to Camp David; we have meetings with various people about very major subjects,” Trump said, according to The Hill. "We’ll be meeting with a lot of people, including generals, as you know, and admirals."
Trump did not specify what the meetings would be about or who would be there. Shortly after boarding the plane, Trump issued a post on Truth Social claiming that “violent, insurrectionist mobs are swarming and attacking our Federal Agents to try and stop our deportation operations.”
He then directed the heads of several of his Cabinet, “to take all such action necessary to liberate Los Angeles from the Migrant Invasion, and put an end to these Migrant riots.”

LAPD requests Waymo shut down app as riots continue
Members of the Los Angeles Police Department have requested that Waymo, the driverless car, shut down their app as people keep calling them only to set them on fire. The request comes as protesters against ICE continue to riot in the streets of Paramount, California.
The protest has been going on for two days and began after ICE launched military-style raids in Los Angeles. In videos posted to social media, law enforcement officials are shown using flash bangs and tear gas on protestors who were trying to block coordinated immigration raids.
The LA Police Department, which did not partake in raids, was called to stop the protests amid President Donald Trump's crackdown on immigration. ICE and Homeland Security Investigations reported the "administrative arrest" of 44 individuals for immigration-related offenses.
Since then, tensions between the two groups have violently escalated, resulting in Trump sending in 2.000 National Guard troops.

Kristi Noem branded a hypocrite after a tweet of her condemning former President Joe Biden calling in National Guard comes back to haunt her
The head of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, is being branded a hypocrite after a video of her condemning Joe Biden for sending the National Guard to the southern border resurfaced on Twitter.
In the video, the then-governor of South Dakota slammed the former president, saying that Biden's activation of the National Guard violated states' rights. "If Joe Biden federalizes the National Guard, that would be a direct attack on states' rights," she wrote in 2024.
"Over the last several years, we've seen Democrats try to take away our Freedoms of religion, assembly, and speech," she added. "We can't let them take away our right to defend ourselves, too. South Dakota defends the Constitution."
The resurfaced tweet comes as Donald Trump deployed the 2,000 National Guard troops to California, as protesters clash with ICE agents. The deployment comes after two days of brutal fighting between the two groups.
Protesters have been met with rubber bullets, flash-bang grenades, and the threat of martial law. Trump was blunt. Any demonstration that hinders his enforcement would now be considered a form of rebellion.

Trump declares 'order will be restored' in fiery Truth Social post amid LA riots
U.S. President Donald Trump issued a fiery statement on Truth Social claiming that "order will be restored." The post was made early Saturday evening.
"A once great American City, Los Angeles, has been invaded and occupied by Illegal Aliens and Criminals," wrote Trump. "Now violent, insurrectionist mobs are swarming and attacking our Federal Agents to try and stop our deportation operations — But these lawless riots only strengthen our resolve."
"I am directing Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and Attorney General Pam Bondi, in coordination with all other relevant Departments and Agencies, to take all such action necessary to liberate Los Angeles from the Migrant Invasion, and put an end to these Migrant riots," he added. "Order will be restored, the Illegals will be expelled, and Los Angeles will be set free."
"Thank you for your attention in this matter," Trump concluded. The post comes as protesters and ICE agents continue to clash in the streets of Paramount, California.
It also comes as Border czar Tom Homan threatened to arrest Gov. Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass for creating "a sanctuary for criminals."

Homan warns California officials of potential arrest for obstructing federal law enforcement
Local California officials, including the governor and the LA mayor, could be arrested if they opposed the federal operation around Los Angeles, warned Border czar Tom Homan in an interview with NBC News.
"I’ll say about anybody," Homan said. "It’s a felony to knowingly harbor and conceal an illegal alien. It’s a felony to impede law enforcement from doing their job."
He echoed Trump in his criticism of California Gov. Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass for creating "a sanctuary for criminals."
Homan said that neither of the two is exempt from potential arrest.
ICE officials have detained nearly 150 undocumented immigrants in the last two days, Homan added.

The National Guard was deployed in Los Angeles on Saturday as U.S. immigration enforcement intensified in the area following demonstrations at a federal detention center, where police used tear gas and flash-bangs and detained a union leader.
Border Patrol agents donned riot gear and gas masks as they stood watch outside an industrial park in Paramount, releasing tear gas among the crowd of onlookers and demonstrators who lined the sidewalks, some heckling the officers while filming the scene on their phones.
ICE Deputy Director Tom Homan announced the National Guard will be sent to the city in an interview with Fox News.
"We are making Los Angeles safer. We are going to bring the National Guard in tonight," Homan added.

DHS Secretary claims National Guard will "make sure that we have peaceful protests"
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that the National Guard soldiers will "make sure that we have peaceful protests" during her appearance at CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday.
"These 2,000 National Guard soldiers that are being engaged today are ones that are specifically trained for this type of crowd situation," Noem said.
The troops will "provide security for operations and to make sure that we have peaceful protests."
She did not detail the ground actions they are taking to ensure safety.
Like Trump, she criticized Gov. Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass, as well as the LAPD's response to the protests against immigration enforcement actions in the area.
"We’re not going to let a repeat of 2020 happen," Noem said, referring to the Black Lives Matter protests that broke out in Minneapolis in the summer of 2020 after the murder of George Floyd due to police brutality.
Noem evaded the questions regarding migrants being allegedly held in makeshift shelters with limited access to food and water.
"What I would say is getting individuals in and out of those facilities was extremely challenging when the violence broke out, and when things were being thrown at vehicles and people were rocking vehicles and shaking them, trying to break into them," she said instead.

300 California National Guard members deployed in LA
Nearly 300 members of the California National Guard are deployed in Los Angeles after two days of protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids, Izzy Gardon, Director of Communications for Gov. Gavin Newsom, told CNN on Sunday.
"There are approximately 300 California National Guard in Los Angeles currently. They were deployed between 0200-0400 Sunday at three sites around Los Angeles," Gardon said.
Dan Bongino, the deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, posted on social media that multiple people have been arrested in LA and New York for obstructing immigration enforcement actions.
Those arrested will face federal, state, and local charges, Bongino warned.
"It will not end well for you if you choose violence. Choose wisely," he added.

LAPD says "events concluded without incident"
The Los Angeles Police Department said protests in the city on Saturday night were "without incident."
"While today’s events concluded without incident, the Los Angeles Police Department remains fully prepared to respond swiftly and appropriately to any potential acts of civil unrest," the LAPD said in their statement.
Trump signed off on deploying 2,000 National Guard troops to LA despite Mayor Karen Bass saying otherwise.
The LAPD statement read, "We will maintain a heightened readiness posture and remain ready to ensure the continued safety of our communities. "

Trump's National Guard deployment is an unusual action
Deploying the National Guard via federal action is quite unusual since the National Guard is usually under state control.
According to the website, the National Guard was brought under federal control using Title 10 of the U.S. Code during the Civil Rights Era. This is the same law that Trump used in LA.
Other presidents, including Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson, have used the National Guard to keep the public in order.
The Guard was federalized during the 1967 Detroit riots, in 196 riots after Martin Luther King Jr's assassination, and in 1970 during the New York postal strike.
The last time a president federalised the National Guard was in 1992 during the LA riots after four White police officers who beat Black motorist Rodney King to death were acquitted, CNN reported.
Dozens were killed and thousands either injured or arrested during several days of rioting.

Senator Bernie Sanders accuses Donald Trump of "authoritarianism"
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders accused Trump of "authoritarianism" after the president deployed the National Guard in Los Angeles against the wishes of city and state officials.
"The mayor of the city of Los Angeles did not request the National Guard, but he thinks he has a right to do anything he wants," Sanders said during CNN’s "State of the Union" on Sunday.
"[The] future of this country rests with a small number of Republicans in the House and Senate who know better," Sanders added.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt previously stated that the action was due to "violent mobs" attacking "Federal Law Enforcement Agents carrying out basic deportation operations."
"These operations are essential to halting and reversing the invasion of illegal criminals into the United States. In the wake of this violence, California’s feckless Democrat leaders have completely abdicated their responsibility to protect their citizens. That is why President Trump has signed a Presidential Memorandum deploying 2,000 National Guardsmen to address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester," she said.

Role of National Guard troops will be limited unless Trump invokes Insurrection Act
Trump's proclamation says that the 2,000 National Guard troops deployed to LA will play a supporting role by protecting ICE officers as they enforce the law, rather than having the troops perform law enforcement work.
Steve Vladeck, a professor at the Georgetown University Law Center who specializes in military justice and national security law, explained that this is because the troppps cannot legally engage in ordinary law enforcement activities unless Trump first invokes the Insurrection Act.
“There’s nothing these troops will be allowed to do that, for example, the ICE officers against whom these protests have been directed could not do themselves,” Vladeck wrote.

American Civil Liberties Union calls says Trump's use of National Guard an 'abuse of power'
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has called Trump's order to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to LA an "unnecessary, inflammatory, and an abuse of power".
Hina Shamsi, director of the National Security Project at the civil rights group, claims the move will put LA residents "in danger".
“By taking this action, the Trump administration is putting Angelenos in danger, creating legal and ethical jeopardy for troops, and recklessly undermining our foundational democratic principle that the military should not police civilians,” Shamsi said.
The ACLU said the mass protests were a response to "dangerous" immigration raids and the arrest of David Huerta, the president of labour group Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California, on Friday.

Newsom called the decision for the National Guard to be deployed “purposefully inflammatory" as he said it will "only escalate tensions.” Mayor Bass branded it “completely unnecessary."
Earlier in the evening, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth threatened put an end to the protests by sending active-duty Marines to Los Angeles. Newsom accused Hegseth of exhibiting "deranged behavior".

What is the National Guard?
Image:
AP)The National Guard is a special part of the US military that answers to both state governors and the president.
The reserve force usually operates at state-level and is called upon by state governors but Trump has used a law that allows him to put National Guard troops under federal command in certain circumstances.
It is made up of more than 430,000 civilian soldiers who respond to both domestic crises and overseas conflicts. It is generally called upon to respond to state emergencies such as natural disasters.
The LA protests will not be the first time Trump has deployed the National Guard. When civil arrest broke out following the murder of George Floyd by a police officer in 2020, Trump called for state governers to send troops to Washington DC.
Many governers did so but some refused to send National Guard troops.
