One of Hollywood’s most well-known black actresses has created a firestorm after being handed a role that most argue should have been played by a white person.

As TGP readers may know, director Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated epic film “The Odyssey” will be released in theaters later this month. The movie, which is based on the Greek poem authored by Homer over 2800 years ago, has sparked controversy with many of its casting decisions.

For example, Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong’o is playing both traditionally white characters Helen of Troy and her sister, Clytemnestra, in the film. Moreover, transgender actor Elliot Page has a notable role.

During a press tour promoting “The Odyssey” last week, Nyong’o spoke with interviewer Jake Hamilton on his YouTube channel about the film and her role. At one point, she was asked what she would say to Homer.

Her response made absolutely no sense.

“I would be like ‘So Homer, how do you feel about the screen time given to these women, considering how little you spent with them?’ Remember us?” Nyong’o quipped.

Americans promptly responded to her question with a series of memes and attacks on her talent. They also fact-checked her by noting that women indeed play a major role in “The Odyssey.”

There is no way Nyong’o read the book.
