A U.S. Air Force helicopter assigned to the elite 1st Helicopter Squadron at Joint Base Andrews made a reported emergency landing Monday night off Foxhall Road NW in Northwest Washington, D.C., just steps from the German Embassy, AA reported.

ABC7 reporter Tom Roussey was first on the scene and reported: “A US Air Force helicopter has made what was reportedly an emergency landing off of Foxhall Road NW, not far from the German Embassy in DC.”

Roussey later updated: “Members of the military and others are inspecting the helicopter. Unclear if they are going to try to fix and fly it out of here or tow it out. It appears to be registered as an Air Force helicopter out of Joint Base Andrews. What appeared to be the Air Force flight crew just left in a truck. It does not look like the helicopter is leaving the field anytime soon.”

The aircraft, a UH-1N Huey, touched down in a grassy area near Foxhall Road and Whitehaven Parkway around 9:25–10:15 p.m. near the Georgetown Reservoir. All four crew members walked away unharmed.

The 1st Helicopter Squadron’s UH-1Ns are the workhorses that shuttle senior government and military officials around the National Capital Region and support continuity-of-government missions.

And this is the second time in just 13 days.

On or around June 29–30, another UH-1N from the exact same squadron reportedly made a precautionary hard landing in a field near Union Bridge, Maryland, about 55 miles northwest of D.C., also due to mechanical issues. That aircraft later flew back to Andrews. No injuries were reported in that incident either.
