A teen murder suspect has been killed inside a Mississippi jail just days after being arrested.
As The New York Post reported on Sunday, 18-year-old Mielun Butler was found brutally beaten and stomped to death inside the Raymond Detention Center back on July 3.
A shocking video that circulated on social media showed a person kicking Butler’s limp and bloodied body as he lay dying on the floor of the jail.
Butler was transported to Merit Health, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Two days earlier, Butler had been busted on a murder charge for the fatal June 13 shooting of 32-year-old Melvin Edwards. The incident occurred at the crime-ridden Pine Ridge Garden Apartments in Jackson.
He was being held on a $1 million bond.
An autopsy later confirmed that Butler passed away due to blunt force trauma to the head.
“It appeared he had shoe prints all over his head,” Hinds County Coroner Jeremiah Howard explained to Mississippi Today.
Below is a local video report on Butler’s murder:
Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said he believes the beating by other detainees may have been retaliation for the killing of Edwards.
Following Butler’s passing, Democrat State Rep. Lawrence Blackmon (D-District 57) demanded that leaders provide the Hinds County Detention Center with better resources to ensure incidents like this don’t happen again.
“I’m calling on the Board of Supervisors to make sure that the Raymond Detention Center receives the funds that they need to hire the staff and implement the changes that they need to keep defendants in their custody safe,” he said.
WAPT reports that the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating Butler’s death, and an internal investigation is underway at the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office.
Jones also stated that a detention officer is on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the administrative investigation.
