Bombings in Damacus, Macron style.
Wearing his – by now – signature aviator dark glasses, French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Syria for a state visit, the first by a Western leader since Bashar al-Assad was toppled.
Macron was received by the new Syrian leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, visited Damascus’ Umayyad Mosque, and held meetings with state officials to help rebuild the Syrian economy and also project an image of stability after the endless crises under Assad.
But all that became secondary after two bombs (in some reports, three) went off in the vicinity of Macron’s hotel today.
🇸🇾🇫🇷 After Macron landed in Damascus yesterday, he was greeted by President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the airport and headed straight to the Umayyad Mosque with him.

The Telegraph reported:
“According to local news, Mr Macron’s motorcade had left the Four Seasons Hotel 15 minutes before the bombs detonated.
The French president’s high-profile visit to Syria, which was ruled by France from 1920-1946, is designed to help the Arab country project an image of stability after years of brutal civil war under Bashar al-Assad, the former dictator.
It also comes as Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Syrian president, prepares to attend the Nato summit in Turkey.”

The Élysée Palace said Macron was not in any danger, and did not even hear any of the bombs.
“At the time of the explosions, Mr. Macron was at the Syrian presidential palace for talks with his counterpart, according to the France Télévisions team on the ground.
’The French president is safe and sound’, the Élysée Palace said. ‘We are currently at the presidential palace, where an extended meeting between the presidents and their delegations is taking place’.”
