US-Iran negotiations are set to continue after discussions and clarifications surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, the ceasefire in Lebanon, and Iran’s nuclear program on the first day of talks in Switzerland.

Vance arrived in Switzerland at around 6 am local time on Sunday, where he joined Special Envoys to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the Iranian Speaker of the Parliament, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf.

The press was dismissed at 1:14 am local time as talks were expected to continue through the night, according to a Senior US Diplomat.

“Topics of discussion have included clarifying some of the confusing messaging from Iran on the Strait and building deconfliction mechanisms to ensure the Strait will remain fully open,” the US Diplomat said.

“We have also worked through deconfliction mechanisms and enforcing the ceasefire in southern Lebanon.”

“We’ve had robust discussions on all elements of the nuclear deal. We plan to continue working through each of these issues and using today’s work as a starting point for ongoing technical talks going forward,” they added.

Qatari Minister of Foreign Affairs is Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani shared a photo of Vance and himself, writing, “From Lucerne, the efforts and joint work continue.”

Pakistan and Qatar, both mediating countries, also said in a statement,

The first session of high level talks under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding have concluded in Burgenstock, Switzerland, with the participation of representatives from the Islamic Republic of Iran, the United States of America, and the two mediating parties, the State of Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

The Lake Lucerne Summit was conducted in a positive and constructive atmosphere. Encouraging progress has been made including the creation of a mechanism for further technical talks.

Building on the MoU, the parties have agreed to the establishment of a High Level Committee, which will provide political oversight on the mediation. Chief negotiators will report regularly to the High Level Committee and lead working groups focused on nuclear, sanctions, and a monitoring and dispute resolution group to ensure the effective implementation of the MoU, and on other matters.

The High Level Committee has agreed upon a roadmap towards reaching a final deal within 60 days, laying the foundation for the immediate commencement of urther technical talks. In addition, a communication line between the parties has been formed for the period mentioned in paragraph 5 of the MoU to avoid incidents and miscommunication with the aim of safe passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

Moreover, the parties agreed on the creation of a de-confliction cell, between the arties, the Lebanese Republic and facilitated by the Mediators, to ensure the adherence of the termination of military operations in Lebanon as per the Mou lechnical talks will continue for the remainder of the week at the Burgenstock resort on all issues.

The mediating parties will continue to do their utmost to ensure that the negotiations continue to be conducted in a constructive atmosphere with the aim of reaching a final deal. The State of Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan express their sincere appreciation to the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran for their ongoing commitment to diplomacy and a peaceful resolution to the conflict The mediating parties further commend brotherly and friendly countries for their continued support and valuable contribution to the ongoing negotiations.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi shared the statement on X, describing the Lebanon ceasefire as the “1st real test.”

“Tireless Pakistani and Qatari mediation has delivered major progress to end Lebanon War. Oil and petrochem exports are waived, blockade lifted, some frozen assets released, and major reconstruction & development plan launched for Iran,” Araghchi said.

Earlier in the day, talks were reported by Iranian state media to have ceased after the Iranian delegation “left the negotiation venue in protest over Trump’s threats,” Barak Ravid reported. However, a diplomat who was present at the negotiations denied the story.

The Senior US Diplomat further said, “The Vice President touched down around 6 am this morning, and our delegation has been engaged in constant meetings and negotiations since then. Contrary to rampant false reporting, the Iranians are still here, and discussions are ongoing.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf did, however, question the President’s threats, warning in a statement on social media, “They had better be careful with their statements, our armed forces are ready to respond in another way. Whatever they say, we are the ones who will act.”

Don’t they think to themselves that if their threats had any effect, they wouldn’t have reached the point of despair today? We don’t count on the threats of the Americans. They had better be careful with their statements, our armed forces are ready to respond in another way. Whatever they say, we are the ones who will act.

President Trump threatened earlier that he’d “blow the sh*t out of” Iran, telling Fox’s Trey Yingst that he had told Iranian officials regarding the Strait of Hormuz, “You close it, and you won’t have a country,” and “You won’t even make it back to your effing country.”

Trump further doubled down on his comments yesterday, in which he floated taking over the Strait of Hormuz and charging tolls.
