GOP rift grows over Trump's new $1.776B anti-weaponization fund

WASHINGTON — While millions of Americans still demand real accountability for the weaponization of government under the Biden administration, Senate Republican Thom Tillis is playing both sides of the street — insisting the controversial “anti-weaponization” fund must be permanently killed with extra steps, yet actively helping Democrats block the basic election integrity measure that would help prevent another 2020-style installation.

In a Capitol Hill press gaggle this week, Tillis made clear he does not fully trust Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s verbal assurances that the $1.776 billion fund is dead.

He pushed for “finality” beyond Blanche’s statements.

“I still think that the weaponization fund needs to be similar to the Powell situation,” Tillis said. “I believe the president, I believe Blanche. Now, let’s just get beyond trust and verify it by taking action that makes it finally and completely dead.”

When asked if Blanche had done enough, Tillis was blunt: “No. That’s what I’m saying. I think taking that extra step — the press won’t have the specter of it possibly coming back.”

WATCH:

The fund in question was a proposed $1.776 billion settlement pot to compensate individuals who claim they were targeted by government “lawfare” and “weaponization” during the Biden administration. It drew immediate bipartisan backlash and legal challenges.

On Friday, the Justice Department refused to issue a signed declaration from Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche verifying that it no longer intends to pursue the fund.

The refusal came after U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema in Alexandria, Virginia, gave the administration seven days to provide sworn declarations under penalty of perjury from Blanche, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward confirming the fund is dead.

In a court filing Friday, the DOJ told Judge Brinkema that such declarations are “unnecessary” and raise “serious separation of powers concerns.”

Brinkema had extended an indefinite block on the fund last week and has repeatedly expressed skepticism that verbal assurances are sufficient. No other federal judges have issued similar rulings, though the case remains active in Brinkema’s court.

As of late June 2026, there is no public indication that the Trump administration plans to pay weaponization victims through the original fund structure.

Blanche has testified multiple times that “we are not moving forward with the fund, period.” However, President Trump has continued to speak positively about compensating victims of past investigations in general terms.

Meanwhile, Sen. Tillis is actively helping Democrats block the SAVE America Act — the bill that would require proof of citizenship to register and vote in federal elections.

WATCH:

The Gateway Pundit pressed Tillis directly on his opposition. He dismissed the push with contempt:

It’s quite simple. It’s a math problem. We simply don’t have the votes… Does any rational person who’s ever had any experience with implementing election law really think that it’s possible to have all that in place in time for this election and not be disruptive?

The victims of the Biden administration’s weaponization were countless: January 6 defendants held without trial for years — many sentenced to decades in prison for what would normally be misdemeanor trespassing — as reported extensively by The Gateway Pundit; pro-life protesters targeted by the DOJ for peaceful demonstrations at abortion clinics; parents labeled “domestic terrorists” by the National School Boards Association and Biden’s DOJ for speaking out at school board meetings; Americans who refused COVID jabs and faced threats from the Department of Homeland Security; conservative journalists, Trump allies, and even sitting members of Congress spied on through abuse of Section 702 of FISA.
The list is long — and the American people still want real justice, not empty assurances. They want secure elections so the next one isn’t rigged, and they won’t be raided by the FBI and jailed simply for noticing it was stolen.
